I think that photo of my Grandfather is my favorite photo of him. Some days there are two or three trains rolling through and other days, none. There is something about those folks who worked on the railroad. They have the best stories. My Grandpa died shortly after I was born and I only saw his brother once or twice, so I never had the privilege of hearing them tell their tales. But my Great Uncle's children shared the stories he wrote and many of them were about his railroading days. I may have to look through them and post a couple more, just for fun. :)Vickihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09409645438732452330noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6292915201767940326.post-8483987710954521742016-12-13T17:59:49.133-06:002016-12-13T17:59:49.133-06:00Really enjoyed this! Trained as a sniper, he fought his way from Africa to Berlin. On making it home all he wanted was a peaceable job and he managed to find that with the railroads. He was a cook on the trains from his return until his retirement and a sweeter, quieter, more peaceable man you never met. I always loved his railroad stories.Spikessibhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01586799040314152959noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6292915201767940326.post-70021763010072953432016-12-13T12:55:21.576-06:002016-12-13T12:55:21.576-06:00Steve...In my family, those who worked for the rai...Steve...In my family, those who worked for the railroad in any capacity considered themselves to be "Railroad Men." I remember Mother saying that her family, while not at all wealthy, made it through the Great Depression of the 1930's better than most due to her Dad having a steady job while so many were unemployed at that time.Vickihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09409645438732452330noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6292915201767940326.post-42897697689927373912016-12-13T12:47:58.809-06:002016-12-13T12:47:58.809-06:00Harry...Both my Grandpa and his brother were depot...Harry...Both my Grandpa and his brother were depot agents. They taught themselves the Morse Code when they were young boys, just for fun. Grandpa's son worked in the same capacity as a young man. The story is told that either Grandpa or my uncle (maybe both - I'm not sure) could watch a train go past and then go into his office and correctly write down the numbers from each train car. Me...sometimes I can't remember where I put my keys!!Vickihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09409645438732452330noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6292915201767940326.post-9604006489220071982016-12-13T11:47:13.419-06:002016-12-13T11:47:13.419-06:00Great stories!
