It was easier for mothers and sisters to direct them without having to undo pants. Peeing and otherwise on pants was hard to wash. They could miss their clothes by being quickly guided. Mention was made of little boys wearing skirts until age 4 or 5. Often they would have their first haircut about the same time as they graduated into long pants.
