No, I Haven't.....

fallen off the edge of the earth.

My computer is on life support.  It has been doing really weird things for a while, and then it decided I didn't need to post here any more.  So after fiddling with it, cleaning about a pound and a half of cat hair out of it's innards, I'm trying again.

I will be replacing this old girl this week, with any kind of luck.  Because she jumps all over the place while I try to type, deletes typing on a whim or just ignores what I want to do, I won't fight with her any more.  I don't have that kind of patience.  She is lucky that I haven't already dropped her out of a second story window into the alley.

I will be back when I have a computer that does what I want it to do and not what it feels like doing when it feels like doing it.

In the meantime, I believe I will go soothe my shattered nerves with a lovely bowl of ice cream topped with strawberries.  Hurrah for comfort food!

  1. You are the third person tonight who has mentioned ice cream, and I've been fighting the urge all evening. Computers are great when they work, and the spawn of the devil when they don't. And just 15 years ago they didn't matter at all.

  2. lotta joy...Ice cream was a huge treat when I was growing up because we didn't get to enjoy it very often. So that's my choice, next to cookies! Have just a little bowl...

I was thinking about that today, that not all that long ago we didn't have computers or cell phones or any other electronic gadgets, and somehow we managed to muddle through. Without a computer though, I would truly miss the blogs I read. It is sort of like having my morning coffee with friends.

  3. We couldn't afford ice cream, when I was growing up, so my mother bought mellorine, which I now know was made with milk and other fats, instead of cream and butter....it was better than nothing, but a poor substitute for my father's occasional treat: homemade vanilla with fresh sliced peaches.

  4. I'm glad you are ok. Thought you might have gotten stuck in the elevator or something.

  5. Jess...Ice cream wasn't in my family's budget, either. I hadn't heard of your mellorine, but I'll bet it was something like the Ice Milk that was sold here. Poor mans ice cream at about half the price of the real stuff. Things got better after Dad bought an ice cream maker at a farm auction. Our milk came from the farm next door, so we had lots of cream. That homemade ice cream was way better than anything you can buy in the stores.

  6. Harry...Nope. No stuck elevators. I didn't run away from home. Nothing exciting. Just a contrary computer. I have been making up lots of brand spankin' new swear words while trying to get it to keep running a few more days. It's kinda sorta working at the moment, but a new computer is at the top of my To Do List for this week. I think a laptop will work well for me. I'm tired of being tied to this desk.

  7. My computer does the same thing. It is not the computer. You need to clean it out, not cat hair, but programs you have not put on their. Try running some free programs to clean your system or take it to have it debugged.

  8. Practical Parsimony...Thanks for the advice. Yesterday I ran Spybot and another system cleaning program that I can't remember the name of off hand. After reading your comment I went into Control Panel, Add and Remove Programs and got rid of three programs I had not installed myself plus another that I never use. I keep an extra keyboard and mouse, so I switched those out as well, just because. It seems to be running better. I appreciate the help.

  9. Your the third person I have heard who has had puter problems. Must be going around.... glad you are alright otherwise.

  10. Mary...I've had this puter for six years now and it gets a workout. I spend lots of time on genealogy and family photos as well as at "YouTube University" learning all I can about things that interest me. Probably more time than if I had a yard or garden, etc. Been wanting a laptop, so this is as good an excuse as any!!

  11. Sounds like you're talking about ny laptop - it also has a mind of it's own.

    I feel your pain...

  12. Dani...Sometimes I think they all have a mind of their own. :)
I've been wanting a laptop, so I probably will go ahead and get one even if I get this one fixed. I like the idea of having a battery operated computer as opposed to one relying on electricity.

  13. I love ice cream. But I can't eat it as much any more. We'll be here when you get back online.

FYI the lap top batteries last about 9 months to a year before issues with them.

  14. Thanks, Rob...I'd rather have a bowl of ice cream than any other desert. I've been looking for recipes for it that don't require an ice cream maker.

I haven't made up my mind for sure on what to do about a computer, but the battery thing is something to consider. My kids all have laptops and none have had any problems. All really like them. But we'll see...

  15. Since you are home often, I would think a desk top would be better. I have a lap top because of the need to be mobile. My next computer will be a desk top again. Unless I can fix one of two that I have.

  16. Rob...I have a desk top now. A laptop is more of a "want" than a "need." There are things like old family photos that I like to share with my kids when we get together. With a laptop, they can download the ones they want to keep. Or they can share their photos more easily with me. When we go to Youngest Son's home for a holiday, he has his laptop on the kitchen counter, open to whatever recipe he is using. I like that. I don't like being chained to a desk. I like to be able to be mobile, even if it is just between rooms in my apartment. But, like I say, it is a matter of want and not need.
