Time for Comfort Food

Woke up this morning to a temperature of -1 and a wind chill index of -19.  The temperature is still falling and the wind is still blowing.

It seems that when the temperatures drop, the craving for comfort food increases.  In my house that means biscuits and sausage gravy for breakfast and a big pot of homemade chicken vegetable soup for supper.  With cornbread and lots of butter.

I live in an apartment.  I don't have outside chores to contend with.  At this stage of my life, I consider that a blessing.  The local weather forecasters are making noises about wind chill temperatures of -35 degrees.   Funny, when I was young there were farm animals to be fed and snow to shovel and all sorts of things that needed my attention no matter how cold or snowy it was.  That didn't bother me much.  Just added another layer of clothes and went out and did what needed doing.

But these days now that I have a considerable amount of age on me, I am content to stay indoors until it warms up.  No problem.  I have a rocking chair.  I have a heavy, warm crocheted afghan.  I have my books.  All I need is a fresh pot of coffee and I'm good.  Let the younger ones go romp in the cold and snow.  Me...now where did I put that murder mystery I've been wanting to read.

Indeed it does, and your menu solution sounds good, too.

    We'll be right over. :)

  5. # 1 Son...Chocolate chip cookies do seem to be this family's favorite comfort food! That's on the schedule for one day this week. And I love you, too.

  6. Gorges...I was thinking about that today - how lucky I am to have been able to retire and not have to face the lousy weather.

  7. I was over ruled when wanting to take Jacob ice fishing today. We would have been just fine in the heated fish house. It's the trek on the snowmobile across the frozen lake that worried Staci. I suppose she was right to not put our son in danger.

  8. I think our bodies burn more calories. We gave up on baking bread & rolls, they just didn't turn out right. Oh well. i think school will be late tomorrow due to the wind chill. Of course my son in Florida had to rub in the fact it was 80 today.

  9. Son...You know I don't usually take sides in your family decisions.....but I gotta tell you. Your wife was right. The wind chill alone today would freeze exposed skin within 10 to 15 minutes. Add to that the wind from riding the snowmobile and you would have been begging for a disastrous outcome. Snowmobiles have been known to freeze up in bitter weather. Walking back across the lake would not have been good. And I'm glad you decided not to go fishing today. Saves me from having to holler at you! :)
    Love, Mom

  10. Rob...Baking bread isn't for everybody. If you don't enjoy the process it becomes a chore. But you did learn how to do it so if the time should come when homemade bread was your only option, you know how. That's important.

My son in Las Vegas couldn't brag as much as your Florida son. Mine saw some snowflakes yesterday, but by afternoon it was in the 50's. Still is a lot better than here.

  12. Mary...My apartment stays warm and even if the howling winds cool things off a bit, I have stocked up on heavy winter clothes. I am ever so grateful that I don't need to go outside unless I want to! I liked your post today. Isn't it nice to be able to look at all the food we have stored and preserved. Makes life so much easier. xoxo

  13. I am getting ready for that same cold blast to reach down here on Wednesday. They are saying we will have single digits ambient temperature for at least two days.

I guess I am about as ready a I can be although there are a few minor things left to do.

I'm glad you are forted up and staying warm.

  14. Harry...Somehow it just seems wrong for Georgia to be that cold. I'm really glad that I stumbled upon this grocery delivery thing here in my area, for having to go out for groceries in miserable weather was the only reason I went out in winters past. I would like to go spend my Christmas gift cards, but even if I wait to do that, I still have lots to keep me busy until spring if need be. Good thing I don't suffer from cabin fever! :)
