Basic Training Graduation

Last week my granddaughter graduated from Army Basic Training.

Her mother, her mother's friend and her brother were able to spend Family Day with her and then attended the graduation ceremony.

Nicki with her brother, Chris.

Jim, my daughter Jeri and granddaughter Nicki

Nicki told me in her last letter that she was excited to get her dress uniform - mostly because she had worked so hard for the privilege of wearing it.  She left right away for Fort Sam Houston, Texas, where she begins her training as a Medic.

There will be more letters as soon as I have her new address.  Because I lead such a quiet life (read boring) I have been writing some about my family when I was growing up and about the lives of my parents when they were children.  She said she enjoys those stories and I am glad she does.  She is one more of that generation who will know who and where she came from.  I think it is important to pass on the family stories from one generation to the next.

Pictures are nice and I am glad to have them.  But what I am really looking forward to is a hug from my granddaughter when she is home for Christmas.

  2. Gorges...I'm glad one of the Grands like hearing them. Helps that many of the stories concerning my Dad are funny! He had a great sense of humor.

  4. Thank you so much, Fern...I will pass your message along in my next letter to Nicki. I am humbled by the blessings I am receiving at this stage of my life in that my children and grandchildren, from my 52 year old son to my 7 year old grandson, all have developed a good work ethic, are responsible for their own actions and expect nothing to be handed to them. I am truly grateful.

  5. We always had a saying when we were still teaching. If you want to know what the parents are like, look at the children. The description of your children says a lot about you. That is wonderful.

  6. What a nice thing to say, Fern. Sometimes I think they grew up well in spite of me. :) What impresses me is the manner in which my grandchildren are being raised. Not one precious little snowflake among them. And that gives me hope for the future.

  8. Thanks, Harry. She worked hard for the payoff of graduation and she is so very proud to be wearing that uniform, and rightly so. She has chosen a difficult path with the Medic training, but if she continues like she has been, I have no doubt she will make it through this as well.

  9. I'm just a casual reader of your blog, but I wanted to congratulate your granddaughter. Tell her to keep an eye open and shoot for Armored; sleeping in your own track, high and dry, beats hell out of anything else...
