Early Spring Cleaning

I've been looking to get rid of my queen sized bed and replace it with something smaller.  Perhaps a daybed.  Oldest Son finally decided that if he could slide the box spring and mattress down the hall, maneuver it around the corner and into his apartment, he would take it.  That was accomplished Sunday evening.

It has been a good, comfortable bed.  But instead of the spring sitting on a regular bed frame, it sat on a wood base that didn't allow for any under-the-bed storage.  And because the only space for my shelves that hold my home canned foods is in my bedroom, things were getting a bit cramped.  And maybe with more space I could fit in the small quilt frame I have been lusting after.  No room anywhere else for it.

Anyway, this seemed to be a good time to do some early spring cleaning.  I haven't been able to move the bed by myself to clean behind it.  That was glaringly obvious when the bed left my apartment.

Sometimes the cat I had would disappear - especially when someone other than me was in my apartment.  I never could find where she was hiding.  Even a couple of years ago when there was a fire in the building, the firemen rescued the dogs I had at the time, but couldn't find the cat even though they took more risks than they should have in the effort.

Now I know where she hid out.  There was a vast amount of cat hair in the tiny space between the head of the bed and the wall.  How she managed to wedge her fat self in there without getting stuck is beyond me.  I think I vacuumed up enough cat hair to build a whole new cat.

So spring cleaning is coming early this year.  I need to wipe down the wall and woodwork and run the carpet cleaning machine over the carpet.  It is kind of nice to have a head start on that project.  Looking on the bright side, I am already nearly done with two-thirds of the spring cleaning!

  1. Cleaning in the winter just has to be the worst! We mostly heat with wood and the dust is horrible! What is cleaned in the morning is dirty again in the evening. It's a never ending battle. I just cannot wait for warmer weather.

  2. Gorges...As long as I can take more steps forward than backward, I think it will all work out. :)

  3. Chickenmom...There was a time where I heated with wood, and even though I really liked wood heat, I remember that trying to keep things clean was a never ending battle. Here the opposite is true. In the warmer months when the windows are open, a fine grit of dust and dirt seems to filter in from the city street beneath my apartment. At least in the winter, the windows are closed and the ice and snow on the streets keeps the dust down. Funny, though, that while I still had the dogs and cat, vacuuming up the hair they shed never bothered me. I miss having them around. :)

  4. I've had similar thoughts. I currently have a Double XL bed (double width, queen length) and am considering a day bed that converts to a double or has storage drawers, made by Ikea. Space is definitely an issue for me as well. Ditto with being able to move things myself.

I chuckled about your write-up regarding vacuuming with pets. Yes, I'm on the every 3-day plan for vacuuming. And daily grooming of my guy. But for me, I love having a dog. I've had cats before but don't want to add any here. Well, unless one adopts me.
It's a beautiful sunny day here, will get out to enjoy it before more rain comes Friday. Cheers, SJ in Vancouver BC

  5. SJ...I took a look at the Ikea website and like the daybeds with drawers underneath. I need sleeping space for one and at this stage of my life I don't see that changing. With a daybed, I will have space for a quilting frame in that room, so it is a win-win all around.

I really miss having a dog. My mother always said if there was a stray dog or cat within a 50 mile radius, it would find me. She was pretty much right! But since being hospitalized a year ago, I have health issues that don't prevent me from taking care of myself, but might interfere with properly taking care of a pet. There are times when it would be impossible for me to take a dog out for a walk. It just wouldn't be fair to an animal that needs fresh air and exercise. Maybe I can talk my daughter into bringing her lab over once in a while for a snoogle. :)

  6. Hooray for spring cleaning. It is not fun until after you look around and see the results. That's the best part. Congrats on the new bed.

  7. Lisa...There are several hundred other things I would rather be doing, but you are right. The results are worth the effort. I'm still looking online to find the daybed I want, but should be able to order one next week. It is amazing how much larger my bedroom looks now that the queen size bed is gone. I like it. :)

  8. Hi again. I also looked into wall beds. I found a model that has a table that folds down when the bed is in the up position. Out of my price range but loved the concept. I also read some where that Ikea may be coming out with a wall bed this year. Don't know how accurate that information was, though. The down side is losing the storage under the bed. 9. SJ...Thanks for the suggestion. I like the concept, too. Especially the idea of a fold down table when the bed is not in use. Right now, the plan to go with a daybed is to make use of under the bed storage (the Ikea bed with the drawers would be perfect to hold bedding and my quilts) as well as using it for seating when using a quilt frame. I will check both out before making a final decision. Won't order anything until all the ducks are in a row! You just come up with the best ideas. :)

  10. don't know how you feel about it and they are not decorative, but i got myself a second hand electric hospital bed.
    comfort!

  11. deb...Because I have problems with swelling in my lower legs and feet, it is necessary to have my feet elevated as much as possible, particularly while sleeping. I had looked at hospital-type beds but hadn't really found anything affordable. Never occurred to me to look for a second hand one. I will see what I can find. Thanks so much for the suggestion.

I don't care much about decorative. With two large shelving units full of canned food in jars in my bedroom now, I don't think my apartment is going to make the pages of "House Beautiful" any time soon. :)

  12. I think that spring cleaning, although a lot of work, it one of the best times of the year. There is something so gratifying about purging all of the things that you do not need in your house and cleaning what you do keep. It always makes the house feel so much better and it is a good feeling at the end of the day to see all the progress.

  13. You never truly know how bad things can get until you start moving furniture or appliances. The first time we moved, my wife was horrified at what we found behind the fridge and the washer and dryer! I have heard a story of a lost hamster being found on moving day. He had been missing for three years!
