Woke this morning...

to the sounds of rolling thunder and raindrops.  A look at the radar tells me there will be more of the same today.  There doesn't seem to be any wind involved so there is no real threat of storms.  Just a nice, soaking fall rain.

Oldest Son and his friend brought my bread machine over yesterday.  I was busy with other things so I haven't tried it out yet.  But if it works as well as advertised, I can see lots of loaves of homemade bread in my future.

They brought me an added bonus of two very full plastic grocery bags of crab apples they had picked for me while they were up north.  We took a vote and the results were that crab apple jelly would be the best way to use the apples.

So after one more cup of coffee, just to get my heart kick started, I am off to the kitchen to do a test run with the bread machine and to get going on turning crab apples into juice for jelly.  Looks like a busy day ahead of me.  :)

  4. Well, Gorges...I just can't seem to get the hang of sitting on the couch, eating bonbons and watching the afternoon soaps (Are soap operas still on TV?). :)

  5. Love Gorge's comment, once again! Also looking forward to the bread recipe. Don't have a source for crab apples.
Had fun this morning going to the grocery store's monthly 10%off day. Let's just say that I like a very deep pantry. Ha! Especially when I find great 'this store only' specials on the 10% day.
It's been raining here steady for almost a week. And now the leaves are falling. I'm thinking Fall is here early. Later in the week I'll get over to my garden space and plant garlic and put the plots to bed for the winter.
Glad to hear you're having a productive day. SJ in Vancouver BC

  6. SJ...Gorges is pretty good at coming up with fun stuff to say!!

I'm just using the recipe that came with the machine. Thought I had better stick with what the company recommends until I get a handle on how it works. I am using the "dough" feature and doing the baking in the oven. I think in the heat of summer I probably will let the machine do the baking. The first loaf just came out of the oven and it looks and smells heavenly. I am sending that one home with Oldest Son so they can try it, and another loaf is working in the machine as I type. Think I'm going to like this. :)

Wish there were a 10% off day here. I'm guessing you found some really good sales for your deep pantry! I'm still ordering whatever I can on sale. I don't know how it is where you are, but there is a general uneasiness about the future here, it seems. I know that I don't feel I can wait to deepen the pantry and add to my preps in general. Sort of like waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Not much in the way of signs of fall here as yet, except that temps are a little bit cooler now. I am almost looking forward to winter. The cold is easier to take than the heat. Enjoy your garden while you can. :)

    Now I am hungry.

  8. BW...Me, too! The first loaf went to Son and his friend, but the second loaf is rising. And when it is baked, it is mine....all mine....slathered with butter and maybe with a bowl of soup. Doubtful I can wait until suppertime!

  9. my cousins use their machine just to mix the dough. my kids walked into goodwill yesterday looked around and walked out due to long line at check out. 50% off yesterday. i thought we would have a bread maker too. 2 in the last two days yeah.....

  10. Rob...That's what I did today - let the machine make the dough and baked it in the oven. Turned out great. Did Goodwill have a bread maker? If they did, it sure would be worth standing in line for half off the price. I never find good deals like that.

  11. Goodwill always seems to have them more used then new. My kids won't stand in line if its really long which it was.

  12. Hi back,
Yes, the 10% day is really handy. A few of the grocery stores here do it. Another has a 10% days for seniors (the seniors discount can be anywhere from 50yo to 65 depending on the store/company).
One store will price match and still give the 10% - now that one is my favorite.
Interesting you talk about the 'general unease'. I'm feeling it here enough that I rejoined Costco for just me and did some ordering. They have some of what I label 'camping food' by Mountain house and others. Very long shelf life in some great looking 10#cans.
Let's hope the unease will pass - but better a little too prepared then wishing you had bought something and didn't.
    Cheers, SJ in Vancouver BC

  13. SJ...I have heard that Walmart will price match but I haven't tried it. Seems like in my area, which is a suburb of Minneapolis, the stores don't have those kinds of deals. I have used Sam's Club when I want to buy in bulk. You have to know regular store prices as sometimes a deal is not a deal, but I have gotten good bargains there.

So far I have been trying to stock up on dried foods by doing the dehydrating myself, but I think I may buy some of the freeze dried stuff in #10 cans for longer term storage. I haven't had much luck with drying fruits, so maybe the freeze dried is the way to have some on the shelves.

I don't know about Canada, but here things are going downhill quickly. We have useless government leaders and those who are making it a career to try to take away as much of our freedom as possible. We have as large an unemployed population as was during the
Depression of the 1930's. Violence in our cities is escalating. Racial tensions are growing daily. The frustration comes in when you realize that the general population is either oblivious or just doesn't want to know. Most of those I am in contact with via Blogland are of the same opinion. We had better do what we need to do Now. If we wait, it may be too late. I, too, hope it all passes and we can get back to a "normal" way of life, but in the meantime, you are 100% correct. Better to be over prepared than not prepared enough.

Me...I just keep smiling and stocking up. :)
