Still Alive and Kicking

I have been busy.  I am getting closer to finding the floor of my freezer.  Cases of my home canned food are being transported to Oldest Son's apartment, giving him easier access to them and freeing up storage space for me.  The people in charge of such things will be here in the morning to go over the paperwork and evaluate my living space to see if I qualify for home health care and for basic apartment cleaning services to help with those chores that have become difficult for me.

With any kind of luck I will be able to get caught up with those blogs I enjoy sometime next week and may even find the time to post more of my usual drivel.  Just wanted to let my blog friends know that I did not fall off the edge of the earth but am up to my elbows in dealing with the stuff I want to get done before the snow flies.  Check out those folks listed in my sidebar.  Good stuff there.  :)

  1. So glad to hear everything is going well. Getting everything in order "before the snow flies" is great! I call it "nesting syndrome" and it hits me every autumn whether I'm ready for it or not. This past week I have been canning applesauce and tomatoes. I bought 4 lbs. of button mushrooms (SUPER sale priced) and dehydrated them for this winter. I shredded lots of zucchini and will be making bread and muffins tomorrow. Glad you are busy and making so much progress. Hope all goes well with the home visit and evaluation. It's
not easy accepting the fact that we can't do everything on our own as we get older. I will include you in my prayers. Thank you for the update letting us know you are busy and well. CWfromIowa

    1. CW...This 'nesting' things seems to hit every fall. I suppose it comes from my mother who, each fall, made sure all the summer bedding and the throw rugs were washed and line dried as well as the scrubbing down of cupboards, walls, etc. I don't do all of that any more, but like to at least get the general cleaning and organizing done so I can play with yarn and fabrics all winter without feeling guilty. :)

Wow - you have been busy! Good on you. I have put the food preservation on Hold for now until the rest of this is completed. I hope to get some applesauce canned later along with more hamburger and bacon bits.

Thanks for the encouraging words. I have hope the evaluation will result in some solutions to problems. I am sort of an ornery critter, so part of it will depend on the number and type of hoops I am expected to jump through. You are absolutely right about accepting that as we age we may need help. That part has been harder for me to deal with than the physical limitations. I appreciate your kind words and prayers. Thank you.

  2. Organizing can be satisfying, but exhausting work.

    1. You are right, Gorges...I probably would have been finished by now if I didn't need to stop every few minutes to rest. Sigh.
At least I am upright and taking nourishment which is more than I can say for some, so I can't complain. :)

  3. I am having trouble getting the doctor's signatures for getting help. I hope it all comes through for you. Don't have the house too clean...lol.

    1. Thanks, Linda...I hope it all works out, too. I had to laugh at one of my kids who called and told me not to do any extra cleaning. I said not to worry. I didn't think super clean was going to happen. :)

    2. remindds me of 'the little woman'.
herbert comes home and asks what's for dinner.
emily said i'm exhausted from cleaning, we'll have to eat out.
herbert said, 'i thought the cleaning lady is coming tomorrow.'
emily said, 'i don't want her to think we live like pigs!'.

  4. Jeez, I need help with the household chores at my place, and I'm just shy of 50. Seriously though, I hope all goes well. We all need a help at one point or another.

    1. K...I have always said, especially when all four kids were still at home, that the only thing I wanted was a cleaning lady! It never occurred to me that the time would come when I would actually need one. Ah...the joys of aging. :)

    1. Kristina...Many of my vintage tend to feel guilty about playing before the work is done. That's why I am working on this now. I want to have a lovely guilt free winter of sewing, crocheting, reading, etc.

You have all sorts of reasons for getting behind. You are always doing something - cooking, baking, crocheting, caring for animals and garden. Me...I have no excuse - at least none that I can get away with. :)

  6. I thought you went into winter hiding already, with all our rain.

    1. Not yet, Rob. Just trying to get caught up so I can spend the winter doing things I love to do without all the extra chores waiting for me. :)

  7. on the home help; friend of ours was given help by the state of florida as he was blind.
the helper made out the checks for the bills and every month added one for herself! she stole other things, too.
we were offered to have someone meet the daycare bus for my mom should i get a job but i was warned they were 'unreliable'.
great! 90 year old mom in 3 feet of snow alone on the street with alzheimer's disease.
    so i just stayed home.
often the states make 'able-bodied' welfare people fill in for these jobs but they are often not worthy to be trusted.
    just a word of warning.
put all valuables in son's place on cleaning day and keep and eagle eye until you have assessed the trustworthiness of the aide.
also, some send male aides. i would discourage that!

    1. Thanks for the tips, Deb. I found that I qualify for the services I need, but it will be at least three weeks before they begin. I have little of any value as I divided most of that between my kids at the time of my husband's death. But I will keep an eye on whoever comes here and make sure nothing is lying about to tempt anyone. I appreciate your concern.

I would have done the same if my aging parent was at risk due to unreliable people. There are many who want the paycheck but don't want to earn it. The thought of leaving someone like your Mom to her own devices is shameful.

  8. Nice to read in one of your replies that you're going to get some help. When I was first sick, I had to use a cleaning service for a few months. I also had to send my laundry out and get some friends to walk my dog. It's not easy asking for help - at least it's not easy for me. I've shared this before, I think -- the best part of using the cleaning service was to get them to change my sheets.
I've taken a few days off the internet so just now reading this post. I, too, have to approach projects differently these days. Putting my gardens to bed is the immediate example. It took me three days to get one garden space ready for winter. In the past I would have just 'gotten it done' and worked until the task was completed. Now, I'm lucky to get an hour in before I head for home. Slow and steady is the name of the game now.
    Take care of yourself.

    1. SJ...It is a bit of a relief to find I qualify for the services I need. There are a variety of services available to me like Meals on Wheels and transportation services, but I opted for health care in dealing with my legs and once a week cleaning services. As long as I can still manage the rest, I prefer to do so. I guess I don't want to give up any more of my independence than I absolutely have to.
You are right about it being hard to even ask for help, but I think that once I get into the routine of having someone come in to deal with those things that are the most difficult for me, it will make life a bit easier. There is a cost involved, but it is based on income and is minimal and won't wreck my budget, which is a good thing.

I think that for both you and me, that slow and steady thing has been irritating. But I guess I would much rather have to slow down than to not be able to do anything at all.

There is just a hint of the coming winter in the night air. We are expecting the first frost of the year tonight. I don't mind winter so much when I can view it from my window, inside my apartment, where it is cozy and warm. I am such a wimp. :)

    1. Jenn...I just got busy and wasn't spending time on my computer. The evaluation went well and I find I am qualified for help in dealing with my leg issues and for once a week cleaning services. It takes about three weeks to set it all up, but after that I think life will be a bit easier. It still rankles that I need help at all, but as long as I can still function in all other areas, I am satisfied.
