Here Today - Gone Tomorrow

The city workers in the town where I live have been busy for the past week at the Town Hall, located across the street from my apartment.  The two story building takes up about a third of the city block along the street where I live.  Barriers were erected, people wearing hard hats were scurrying about and the water was turned off for part of the day last Thursday.  I didn't pay a whole lot of attention.  Until this morning.

I was enjoying my first cup of coffee of the day while scanning the news headlines and perusing some of the blogs I read daily, when I heard the sound of a crash, coming from the street below.  This was no ordinary crash, but was loud and long and sounded like someone was dumping great quantities of cans and bottles into the middle of the street.  Nosy person that I am, I went to the window to see what was going on.

To my amazement I saw a giant backhoe that was taking huge bites out of the building.  The crash I heard had been the collapse of one of the outer brick walls.  I watched the progress off and on throughout the day.  The machine kept taking down chunks of the building.  The work had begun about 8 AM and by 4 PM there was nothing left but a mountain of rubble.

I guess I lied when I said nothing ever happens in my corner of the world.  I can't hardly wait to see what happens next.  :)

  1. It will remain to see what replaces it before you know if it was "progress" in action. - lol

    1. Gorges...It should be interesting. The last time the city did something like this, they demolished a whole city block of historic buildings to put up a three story apartment complex that few can afford, with stores underneath that nobody rented. Progress - bah!!

    1. Kristina...I don't particularly like to see things destroyed, but it was interesting to see just how they did it.

  3. What Gorges said..hahaha
Yesterday held a surprise for me as well. I was quietly reading when there was a huge noise outside my window and the floor was vibrating. Looked out the window to see a crew working a huge stump grinder on part of the landscaping area. Yikes.
Never a dull day in retirement, right?
    Cheers, SJ

    1. Good Grief, SJ...That must have got your attention right quick!! I just had the noise. I just read on the town's website that they are thinking about putting up an apartment building on that spot. Not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing.

I shall not complain about quiet, dull days. Seems like when I do, parades go by and buildings come down. :)

  4. Hi Vicki! Well that's something that you don't see everyday across the street!
Also I saw your comment on my latest post, but it has since disappeared...that's 2 comments missing. Must be a glitch. Thank you for the comment and an old schoolhouse would be my ideal fixer upper!!

  5. Cokato is finishing up a new fire station that we badly need. Last fall someone started the town needed a new city hall. my reaction was build it over the new fire station. Save money.

It will be interesting to see what they build. You know that property taxes will go up all across the area. I wonder how much taxes have gone up here the last two years as almost every home had storm damage from hail. New roofs, siding etc.

    1. Rob...Sounds like a new apartment building might go in there but I don't think the city council has made a final decision as yet. I'm sure property taxes will go up - they sure never go down!

  6. sounds like your slumber days are on hold for the moment. next it will be dump trucks slamming around the streets. then hammers banging on boards all day. hmmm I might be inclined to invest in ear plugs!

    1. Mary...The dump trucks are already busy slamming about hauling off the rubble. Lucky for me they are only working in the daylight hours. We will likely be up to our hips in snow before too long, so I'm thinking the hammers may hold off until spring. But then I may be in the market for ear plugs. :)
