The Sun Shines...

on my little corner of the world today.  I haven't even checked the weather forecast.  I just want to enjoy the day without knowing if it will last or if more rain is coming.  Sometimes ignorance really is bliss.

I'm working really hard to become mobile again.  That means that today I am spending less time sitting and more time up walking and getting the day to day household stuff done.  This seems to be disconcerting to my Yorkies.  It has taken a long time to get back to normal (whatever that is).  They must have gotten used to seeing me quiet as opposed to my usual moving about, for today they are tag-teaming me.  One of them spends an hour or so following me wherever I go, tags off to her sister, who then spends an hour following me wherever I go.  This has been going on all day.  I finally had to kennel them both for a while so I could get them out from under foot.

It has been a bit frustrating to be sidelined here at home while grocery prices continue to move skyward at an alarming rate.  I was glad that I had so much food canned and dehydrated, for it really helped to have it over the long miserable winter and then for the past few weeks when I couldn't get out.  But supplies are starting to run low.  I like to have lots of hamburger and turkey canned and I am now down to 8 pints of burger and 6 pints of turkey.  Turkey prices haven't gone up too much, but the price of hamburger has doubled in the past year.  Those two things are at the top of my grocery list.

For the rest, I will just wait for the sales and stock up then, except for onions.  I love onions for cooking and I like to have lots dehydrated for that purpose.  A 5 lb. bag of onions, once dried, will easily fit into a quart sized freezer bag, which solves some of my storage problems.  I saw that Sam's Club has a 50 lb. bag of onions for about half the price per pound of the grocery's 5 lb. bags.  I may have to see if one of my kids is feeling strong enough to haul a bag up here for me!

Time to get back at it.  I've sat long enough.  I'm really looking forward to seeing what the outside world looks like again.  With any kind of luck, that will be sometime this coming week.

Life is good.

  1. Food prices are outrageous. Considering how many have fixed incomes, the government not addressing this problem is unconscionable.

  2. I am glad you are moving around better. Our grocery store has big slabs of meat that they will cut into steaks the price is like $4.00 a pound vs the steak they cut and package at $6.00 a lb. If you buy the bulk meat they will cut it for you at no charge. Find that at Cub or Walmart. They have turkey at $1.29 lb frozen We are planning on buying one for sure. I see some of the highways by you are closed due to flooding. Stay safe.

  3. Jess...I don't know how those on a fixed income who have medical bills or mortgages do it. I am one of the lucky ones who has neither, nor do I have any debt. Even so, if I didn't can or dehydrate much of my food, or shop sales and buy in bulk, I would be in trouble. Some laugh at us crazy preppers, but it is what makes it possible for me to live and not just exist.

  4. Be careful not to charge ahead so hard that you have a backset.

  5. Thanks, Rob. It's nice to be able to move a bit easier. I'll look for the bulk meat next time I'm at Cub. I usually try to keep about a month's worth in the freezer and can the rest. Next time turkey goes on sale (although $1.29 is a good price) I will buy at least 6, cook them up and can them. I make broth with the carcasses and can or freeze that, too. I make more casserole or stew type meals than I do meat and potato meals, so canning works good for me.
I haven't been out, so I don't know about the roads, but I'm not surprised if they are flooded. Hope we have more sunshine for a while.

  6. Gorges...I did that to myself once already - one step forward and two steps back! So I am being careful. No cartwheels or handsprings here. :)

  7. Glad to hear you're becoming more mobile.

It's strange - blogs, especially those in America, often mention sales on meat. That doesn't happen here...!

  8. Thanks, Dani...It is good to be up and about again.
Grocery prices here are rising at an alarming rate.....especially meat prices. Grocery stores run weekly sales, trying to draw in customers. So when we see a good sale price on meat, we tend to talk about it. Rob of "Rob In His Bunker" and I live fairly close to each other. Neither of us lives in a place where we can raise our own meat animals, so we rely on grocery stores for meat. Rob and his wife shop at some of the same stores as I do, so we sometimes mention a good local sale. Every little bit of money saved helps.

  9. I put dehydrated onions into almost everything I cook. I keep a big pail of them in the pantry. I get mine from Walton Feeds, so I can't claim any credit for making them. But they sure add a lot to otherwise mundane things like pork and beans, or chili, or eggs, or.....
    anything!

  10. Harry...I cook the same way. I toss a handful of dry onions in darned near everything. I've got two dehydrators so it makes sense for me to dry them myself, and they are so easy to dehydrate. Just chop them up, spread them out on the trays and let them go. The only drawback is that crying thing when chopping onions, but I can live with that considering the results!
