Last fall my oldest son headed out for Arizona. He spent several weeks looking for work with no results. So he moved on to Las Vegas to try his luck there. The temp. job he found ends this week. There are no other jobs for him on the horizon. My son has always been a hard worker and has not been picky about jobs. This tells me that the job market is really lousy or it is flooded with those willing to work for starvation wages. I'm not sure which.
At any rate, he is headed home in a little over a week. As a Mom, I'm really happy to again have all of my chicks close by. In this time of such uncertainty I am glad that my family will be close. There is strength in numbers and I would rather have those numbers be family.
Duane has kept his sense of humor. This morning he posted a link on Facebook to the Ozzy Osbourne song, "Mama I'm Coming Home." :)

More and more families (and friends) are sharing homes to make ends meet.If your son doesn't mind the stigma that others will try to attach to it, maybe the two of you can look for a place that you can sort of divide-up into seperate quarters.
ReplyDeleteGorges...He and I have shared living quarters before without a problem. It is something to think about.
ReplyDeleteSome may say it's a bad thing but I feel the sagging economy bringing families back closer together is a good thing. All family members are going to need each other before this thing ends.
ReplyDeletePreppy...I completely agree with what you are saying. I am sorry that my son was unable to find decent work where he wanted to be, but at the same time, I am really glad that he is headed back home where the rest of his family lives. I think it is more important than ever for families to stick together as much as is possible. It is tough to help each other when family members are scattered all over the country. And I think the time is not all that far off when we will need to do just that.
ReplyDeleteI think there are all kids of jobs out there, but like you said at low wages. remember back years ago you left high school went into the military or a vo-tech and stayed at a job for life??? No more.
ReplyDeleteI have a cousin who was in a union job, with no future as far as moving up in the co. he told me he was riding the job to retirement. He got hurt on the job twice had surgeries, when he healed from the last one. He was fired. No more union job.
Rob...You are right. The days of job security are gone. I haven't talked at length with my son about jobs where he has been, but I know that it must be bad if he couldn't find work. He isn't a kid. He is well into middle age. And he has always been a good worker and a hard worker, so I know that there had to be something with the job market. I do know that once he gets back home, he won't have trouble finding a job. He never has lacked for work around here.
ReplyDeleteIt's really hard on the younger bunch. Jobs are hard to find, tend to be temporary or part time, and not remunerated worth a Tinker's damn.
ReplyDeleteHarry...It seems to be getting harder for everybody. My son isn't a kid. He is 50 years old with an excellent work record, and is still had a hard time getting a job. I don't know if it is the area - the southwest may be a worse area for jobs than here in the north. I do know that once he gets back home, I have no doubt that he will find work quickly. And he gets it as far as preparation goes, so I'm doubly glad to have him on his way home.
