Wadena, Minnesota Says "Take That, Atheists"

Wadena, Minnesota (population about 5,000) has for years erected a Nativity display in the center of town to celebrate the birth of Jesus.  This year the Freedom from Religion Foundation complained about it and threatened to sue the town, so the city council reluctantly removed the display.

Wadena residents did not take kindly to having their beloved and traditional Nativity display removed, so they did something about it.

It may be just a small thing, but each and every time we stand up to be counted for what we know to be right, we become stronger.  Good on you, Wadena.  And Merry Christmas!!

  2. Rob...I thought Wadena's answer to the complaint was more than classic. "Tell me I can't have a Nativity display? Fine. How do you like these several hundred Nativities on private property where you can't touch them!!"

  3. I have never understood how a handful of malcontents are able to impose their will on thousands of others. If someone doesn't want to see a nativity scene, let them avert their eyes. It's always some arrogant liberal who holds the great mass of the people in contempt and believes it's their purpose in the universe to force the liberal mindset on them.

  4. Harry...I'm thinking they do it the way they did with this town - threaten to sue, probably for millions. Small towns in fairly poor areas like this one don't have the resources to fight in court. Those who complain and threaten are no better than schoolyard bullies. That's why it tickled me so to read about how the townsfolk got together and said, "Oh, yeah? You don't like our Nativity scene? Fine, then. Take a look at this one and this one and this one and....."

  5. Bravo to Wadena!!! It is time that Christian's stand up for what they believe and quit cowering down to the minority few that want to impose their will on everyone. It is ridiculous that we must tolerate their belief's, but they do not have to even begin to except what Christian's believe. This country wouldn't even exist if not for the Christian belief. I will agree to disagree, but I'm tired of my belief's being trampled on.

  6. Jim...I really like the approach those people in Wadena took. They didn't organize a protest. They didn't make any nasty, hate filled speeches. They didn't set anything on fire to show their displeasure. And they didn't take the bait for a long, drawn out, expensive legal battle. They just went ahead, took down the original Nativity display and then started a peaceful campaign to display as many Nativity scenes around town, on private property, as they could. So far it is working a whole lot better than the threats from the atheists. And isn't that more of a Christian way to deal with that problem? This is me...giving Wadena a standing ovation!

  7. Good for them! Why is it that those that complain tend to control the rest of us?

  8. Fern...I don't understand either. I do not break out in hives over a Jewish Menorah, nor do I get my knickers in a twist over a Hindu Buddha. But then, I have no desire for power or control. In a case like that of Wadena's Nativity scene, I think perhaps the motivation on the part of those insisting it be removed was just plain meanness.
