More Canning

I need to empty my chest freezer.  There are Farmer's Market vendors that sell beef and pork by the half or quarter.  Duane and I have decided to order a little later this year and split the meat and the cost.  Having done the math, I find it is cheaper to buy in bulk than it is to buy from the grocery.  And by buying directly from the farmer, we know what we are getting.  So far, in addition to the asparagus, I have canned peas and sweet corn.  Today I am canning ground beef.  Tomorrow it is cranberry sauce, whole cranberries and cranberry juice.  I will be back when I am a little bit closer to seeing the bottom of my freezer.  :)

  1. Don't fall in...
Just in from the garden with enough asparagus and lettuce for a dinner salad. Yum - I'm leaving half the asparagus to flower but still harvesting some.
Buying beef from a local farmer sounds dreamy. Will be interested to hear more.
    Cheers, SJ

    1. SJ...I have a ways to go before there is room for me to fall in. :) Lord only knows what is hiding underneath all those cranberries.

I finally got a taste of asparagus, after drooling over yours! I saved enough out for a meal and it was wonderful.

We likely won't be getting the meat until end of summer or early fall. But I am trying to can up what I can from the freezer now before it gets too hot here and before the Farmer's Market produce is ready. I want to be able to shut the freezer off for a couple of days so I can defrost it. That's when I will be in danger of falling in. :)

  2. Gone a few weeks and you are still firing your food....LOL. We bought some hamburger from a farmer this price for burger was about the same as the local market, and it is only in 1 lb packages.

    1. Good to hear from you, Rob...Yep. I'm still at it. Likely will continue to fire food most of the summer and fall! We are buying in bulk because even though some cuts of meat are priced higher than at the store, some are priced lower. It averages out over all to cost less for the same amount of meat. And I really like being able to get meat that isn't full of chemicals.
