Merry, Merry and Happy, Happy

It's almost here again.  So the next few days will be busy ones.

The last time the three youngest Grands were here, they gave me those big, sad kitten eyes while telling me how much they love caramel popcorn.  And since the first batch I made has long since disappeared between Oldest Son and me, I'm making a couple of batches to take with when we all get together.

It has been an unusual winter here in southern Minnesota so far.  Although there have been a couple of light snowfalls, the white stuff has melted shortly after it hit the ground.  Most of the moisture has been in the form of rain.  But the weather guessers are predicting one to three inches of snow for later today, so we may have a white Christmas after all.  I'm glad I only have to travel across town.

We will be together as a family early in the day on Christmas Eve.  I always look forward to that time for I love it when all my kids and grands are in one place at the same time.   Granddaughter Nicki made it home from the Army base in Texas.  I treasure this time for she will be stationed in South Korea when she finishes her training in March.  It may be some time before she can come home again.

Neither Oldest Son nor I have any other plans for Christmas Day, so we will spend time together.  Today is grocery delivery day and I have a ham on order.  Even though there are just two of us, it is still fun to fix a nice Christmas dinner.

I am grateful for those who visit this silly little blog.  I so enjoy reading and responding to your comments.  It is like having a whole passel of friends even though we have never met in person.  I wish you all a peaceful, joyous and blessed Christmas and a New Year much better than the one that is nearly finished.

God bless,
Vicki

  1. I for one am very glad I found 'your silly old blog'. In my real every day life, there are very few people who think about preparing for the what-ifs in life. So I am glad to have found a like minded person in you and the other readers here.
Your plans for Christmas sound fun. I had to change my plans due to some health issues but that's ok. I am going to an 'orphans' dinner a friend is hosting for some of us here without family. I'm looking forward to it. Wishing you and yours a very blessed and Merry Christmas. SJ in Vancouver BC Canada

  3. If it was silly, I probably wouldn't take the time to read it (unless it was REALLY funny). Keep up the good work and Merry Christmas.

  4. SJ...Merry Christmas! I'm glad you found this silly old blog, too. The people who understand about being prepared are scarce in my neck of the woods. Those like you and others who come here and leave comments are important to me, for you all keep me motivated. I'm so sorry you don't have family close, but am awfully glad to hear you won't be alone over Christmas.

  6. Thanks, Gorges...You have been stopping in for quite a while now, so you know I can get silly now and again, and I also can go on an occasional rant. I appreciate that even with all of that, you keep coming back! A very Merry Christmas to you and your wife and of course, the Mighty Dachshund!

  8. Fern...May you and Frank be truly and well blessed. Merry Christmas to you both.
I am so very glad to have found you as well. Like minded folks are as scarce as hen's teeth around here. You have a way of keeping me on track, and for that I am so very grateful.

  11. Dear Vicki,
We should never underestimate the power of a kind word, a good story, a thoughtful deed, an act of faith such as prayer, or the love of family and friends. It's been said by other readers, but I must say it again. Your blog is so important and such an inspiration to those of us who have discovered your site.

I truly believe that I was chosen by God, to receive and believe in His messages or warnings of difficult times ahead. He gave me the ability to question the many things in our world that no longer make sense. In my effort to find answers and information, I found Frank and Fern and then the link to your site. Both sites have provided a great amount of information and inspiration!
I also have a son who lives nearby. Even at the age of only 30, he understands that things are going south quickly. He comes by the house daily to see if I need any help. Today, the two of us cracked open the last of the winter squash from last summer's garden and baked them...all 57! After he headed to work, I managed to freeze 27 bags of delicious acorn squash for us to enjoy this winter. I also did a little research and found that I could toast the squash seeds. It was tedious work trying to get those slimey little things cleaned up, dried off, and toasted but ooooh yummy! A quart of those tastey little seeds have been added to some dried fruit. A new and healthy snack for us. I love learning how to do something new!

Vicki, may you and your family have a blessed Christmas and a very Happy New Year! Keep writing so that I/we may continue to enjoy your words of inspiration. CW

  12. CW...I am humbled by your words. I have never thought of myself as any kind of inspiration, but just a chubby granny recording the activities in a not-so-exciting life. If I have any goal for this blog, it would be to pass on what was taught to me with the hope that somewhere, someone might come to understand that we of a certain age may not have the ability to fight on the front lines, but we surely can see to it that our families have food to eat and water to drink and supplies to see us through whatever comes.

It wasn't until about 5 years ago that I began to really pay attention to what is going on around us. Frank and Fern are such an inspiration to me. Although their lifestyle is so very different from mine - they being homesteaders and me being an apartment dweller - I still have found that we have similar goals, the main one being to make it through when the going gets rough. So many of the others I follow regularly are of the same mindset, and it is so reassuring to know that we are not alone in this.

I am glad you have a son who helps you in your endeavors. I have no doubt that any one of my four would and have been here when I needed them to be. But it makes life so much easier to have one who is close by and who gets it. I had to smile reading about your son helping you with the squash, as mine did the same earlier this fall. 27 bags of squash! Wow!

I pray that you have a wonderful Christmas. When we can be with family, it is good. Bless you and yours.

  16. Thank you, Harry. I may live in the city, but my heart is down home country.
Earlier today I spent time with all my kids and grands and it was a delight. Christmas Day Oldest Son and I will share a traditional ham dinner. I truly hope your Christmas with your family will be as nice as mine. Merry Christmas, Harry!

  17. I'm really late in responding to this post, but I wish you a very Merry Christmas and may God bless you and your family in this coming year. I will be spending the morning at my daughter's for the annual Christmas brunch and then the opening of gifts.

I'm already looking forward to spring as we have had more snow and cold this year than I can remember for at least the last 10 years.

  18. A very Merry Christmas to you and your family, Jim. My family gets together at my daughter's home for brunch and gifts, too. Only on Christmas Eve rather than Christmas Day. It is a time I always look forward to each year.

The predicted snow storm slid on past us, so we in southern Minnesota are still without a flake in sight. Not that I'm complaining. I am not a big fan of winter. I suspect that eventually we will get hit by Old Man Winter, probably with a vengeance to make up for lost time!

God bless you and yours, Jim. My prayer is for an upcoming year better than the last for all of us.
