Just Not Working

I have been trying all morning to write a new post and it just isn't working.  The words aren't there.  It isn't that the subject is difficult, for it was just about another day in the life of this chubby granny.  Rather than fight with it any longer, I shall give my brain a time-out and head to the kitchen to re-can some pickles and bake some bread.  Perhaps tomorrow my brain cells will line up and let me write something that makes sense.  :)

  1. I understand that affliction quite well. Mine got to the point that I couldn't think of anything at all for weeks ... then months.

    1. Rev. Paul...Sometimes I can sit and write several posts - one right after another. Other times....not so much. I completely understand why you pulled the plug. I am tempted to do the same now and then, but I would really miss the conversations in the comments. I do miss your blog, especially your daily scripture. And your Alaska scenes - even the moose photos. :)

  2. It happens to the best of us! I have several posts started but can't quite complete them. The words will come. Take care.

    1. Thanks, Jenn. I know the words will come back. Just not today. :)

  3. The obvious answer is to post a photo of a hay bale.

    1. BW...Good point! But there are no hay bales close by. Maybe a photo of canning jars. Lord knows there are enough of them within sight. :)

  4. Today I was sort of having the same problem, but with handiwork. I decided, after planting some strawberry plants to take the day off. Ha! I ripped out an entire dishcloth, got fed up and put the yarn away. Got out another project, and low and behold I messed that up. I just went back to the kitchen and prepped veggies for dinner. Hopefully we'll both be zippy-da-do-da tomorrow.

    1. Kristina...I can sure relate! Like when I am merrily sewing together quilt pieces only to discover I have been putting them together a** backwards. Or while crocheting a large granny square, find I skipped a stitch four rows back. Today it was the words that just wouldn't go together the way I wanted. I am counting on that zippy-da-do-da tomorrow. :)

By the way, could you please tell me what yarn you use for dishcloths? I have patterns for easy crocheted ones but am unsure of the yarn to use. That's something I have been wanting to do. The homemade ones have to be better than those sleazy store-bought cloths.

  5. Some days are like that. And isn't that one of the joys of retirement: you can do exactly what you want. No boss to answer to. I say go make a cuppa and hunker down with a good book.

As for me, I had a most excellent day at the thrift store. Found a manual grain mill that had never been used. Still in it's box. I've been waiting for years to get one. Yippee - all for $10.49. Also found a summer dress that I loved and, of course, some more dvds. Don't really need them but love adding to my library/collection.
And, my apartment is letting tenants create some veggie gardens. I've been paired with two young-ish ladies both with young families. We have an assigned area where we can create 'our' garden. Now, I really need another garden space like I need more dvds, but I jumped in on this project. It is just steps from my door. Oh, the joys to be able to grab some herbs or veggies at a whim. And, I think it will be fun to be around some kids and other neighbors in this project. It could be a huge disaster but I'm hoping for the best. The disaster could come when the non-gardeners think the veggie garden is an eyesore. But that's down the road - or not.
    Take good care of yourself.
So - are you 'downsizing' pickles from a large jar to smaller jars in your recanning efforts? I've thought to do that but haven't tried it.
I for one would miss you and your blog if you stopped writing, just saying.
    Cheers, SJ

  6. If this is a repeat, sorry. I replied earlier but when I checked just now it's not there.

Maybe I was too long winded before, ha!

Put your feet up, have a cuppa something and enjoy a good book. Blogging is supposed to be fun - not work. That's the beauty of retirement in my mind. Do what I want, or not, and not have to answer to a boss.

I am joining a gardening group here at my apartment building. Jury is out whether this will be a good thing or not. I'm hoping for the best. I've been partnered with two other ladies who both have young families. 'Our' garden is just steps from my front door. I'm so excited if this works. Stay tuned

    1. Hi SJ...I haven't seen your first comment, so it is likely floating around in cyberspace. If long winded had anything to do with it, most of my replies to comments would disappear!

Most of the time blogging is fun. The days when I get frustrated because I know what I want to say but can't seem to put it together, are few and far between. I did pretty much as you suggest. Several cups of coffee. Baked a couple loaves of bread. Read for a while. It was a lovely day. Retirement - I highly recommend it.

How exciting to have a garden so close! I hope it all works out for you. Let me know how it goes. Some years ago the managers of the apartment building where my Dad lived did something similar. They plowed up part of the back lawn for garden space and each resident who wanted to could have a section. Dad spent many happy hours in his garden. I will have to do a post about Dad's 7 ft. tall tomato plant. :)

  7. At least you KNOW the writing is not coming and is not good. I was pretty ill for a week and just kept churning out drivel. I would love to see pictures of your canning jars, just anything. I am not hard to please.

    1. Linda...I have churned out my share of drivel!!
I guess I do need to start taking pictures again. I sort of stopped when I became pretty much housebound. I forgot that there are lots of things I can photograph right here. Maybe I'll take some canning jar pictures next week - just for you. :)

    1. Lisa...Yeah, they do. Sometimes it is good to just set things aside for a bit and when you come back, it all falls into place. Hopefully. :)

Can't take much credit for the pickles. I bought some large jars of them on sale and now I'm re-canning them in half-pint jars that are better suited for just one person.

    1. Thanks, deborah...I did a search to see where I could find that yarn locally. It seems that Walmart has it listed on their website, but also says it is unavailable. I did find lots of listings for Sugar & Cream cotton yarn along with several blogs and forums where folks say it can be used in place of Peaches and Cream. I haven't seen the yarn with the scrubby material in it and I think I would rather use the plain yarn anyway. If I can't find Peaches and Cream locally, I may try the Sugar and Cream. Thanks for your help. You always have such good information.

  10. I'm just learning crochet. Mostly self taught but my neighbor lady spent an hour with me. I've been using Bernat Handicrafter Cotton.I bought it at Michael's. I'm still on the dishcloth projects!
Yes, I hope the gardens will be fun. First time the three of us + kids will be getting together is Sunday.
How'd your Dad grow tomatoes that tall? Wow! Would love to know his secret.
My best tomatoes grown here in the NorthWest was when I lived in Seattle. The west & north sides of the backyard had a brick retaining wall. I'd plant the tomatoes in the corner so two sides of the garden bed was lined with the bricks. I got tomatoes at least two weeks ahead of my neighbors.
Does it matter if the pickles are dills or sweets for the recanning? And do you make up your own brine or heat up what was in the larger jar?
    Cheers, SJ

    1. SJ...I learned to crochet from reading needlework magazines and library books. Mother crocheted, but she used a fine thread and made those lacy doilies. I could never master the fine thread and tiny crochet hook. I like to make afghans, but thought it might be fun to make some dishcloths.

I just put up a post about Dad and his tomato plant. He got such a kick out of growing that silly plant.

What a great idea - planting tomatoes in such a sheltered corner. I wouldn't have thought to do that. The added warmth from the bricks must have done wonders for the plants if you had ripe tomatoes two weeks early.

I don't know as it would matter much what kind of pickles you re-canned. I haven't done this before - only seen where others have. I understand that the pickles come out not quite as crisp as the originals, but that doesn't bother me any. I got busy yesterday and today with other things, so I haven't re-canned them as yet. Likely won't until the weekend. I may do a post on how they turn out. It is just one of those things where the big jars are on sale, but that's too many pickles for me to finish right away. Do pickles go bad after a while once they are opened? I don't know. But for one person, half pints make more sense.
