There are green things...

growing in pots on my windowsills.

Amazing!

I have yellow snap beans, green peas, cucumbers and cantaloupe that have poked up through the soil.  Oh, and two lonely little cherry tomato plants.

I am surprised to see the cantaloupe growing.  Maybe three years ago I saved some seeds from a store bought melon that was exceptionally tasty.  I haven't done anything special with the seeds - just put them in an envelope and stored them in a box on a shelf with the rest of my seeds.  Same with the cherry tomato seeds.  They came from the little garden David had in his back yard.  My grands had picked a bucket of cherry tomatoes for me and I saved a few seeds.  And they are actually growing.  Well, two of them anyway.

What possessed me to buy some garden seeds to begin with, I don't know.  I live in an apartment.  The communal deck on the building isn't large enough for any serious container gardening, although Duane and Lori have three tomato plants growing there.  I guess acquiring seeds is just part of the preparedness thing.

I know I am easily amused, but the fact that these plants are actually trying to grow tickles me.

I wonder if I can keep from murdering them like I do with most house plants.  I hope so.

  1. That's great that they are growing! I always intended to grow some herbs but another thing I haven't got around to yet!

    1. Jenn...I am simply amazed! The seeds are old and I took no special care with them, but there they are - growing away! I tried herbs last year but managed to kill them off. Maybe I will have better luck with peas and beans. :)

  2. Look at you go!!
I love experimenting with veggies and herbs. I've learned that thyme and oregano love living in a pot by my front door. And they over winter just fine. Houseplants, like I've often said, not so much.
My newest garden at my apartment is showing promise - still little sprouts but I suppose I could/should pick some of the lettuce. Fun too to get to know my neighbors. Every little bit we do to save money and be more self sufficient really adds up.
    Take care. SJ

    1. SJ...These vegetables were planted just on a whim. I will be astounded if any of them bear fruit, but it is fun to see them grow. It satisfies my urge to go dig in the dirt.

So glad your garden at your apartment is working out. It seems easier to get to know folks when there is something in common to talk about. And anything you can grow yourself is a big plus.

Just checked the pots on my kitchen windowsill and discovered three more cherry tomato plants had poked through. I have two pots of the tomatoes, so maybe I will get a few growing. We shall see.

I really am easily entertained. Something about the simple thing in life. :)

  3. You'll probably have to use a q-tip to hand pollinate the blooms if you want anything to set on.

    1. Good plan, Gorges. If I can keep them alive that long. :)

    2. Was thinking the same thing as Gorges. But I know it works - a friend here has citrus trees( orange and lemon) that she has to grow inside and uses her q-tips for pollination. It works. SJ

    3. SJ...I did a little research into hand pollination, on the off chance that these plants live to the flowering stage. The cantaloupe, cucumbers and zucchini need to have pollen transferred from the male flowers to the female flowers. Q-tips work for that process, they say. The rest just need to have the blossoms shaken a bit to self-pollinate. The trick is not to kill them off before they set blossoms. :)

  4. Sounds like you are doing better with your seeds in your apartment than I am here on the mountain top. Until my wife gets back I really don't feel like fooling with gardening much. It's a lot more her interest than mine, just something we do together.

    1. I am really surprised that the seeds sprouted and seem to be growing well. The only ones that aren't up are the bell peppers. For those of us who like to garden, the process is a joy. But for those who don't care much for gardening, it can be a chore. It is good you and your wife can work together on a garden. That's just one more food source to have should things go bad. I have a lousy track record of keeping indoor plants alive, so I am really going to have to pay attention so I don't murder these.
