Weird Weather

I suppose there have been times when the month of August has been cool, but I don't remember any.  In a normal year August is hot and sunny.  Today at noon, even with the sunshine, the temperature was only 68 degrees with promise of the 50's for tonight.

Those who delight in days spent lakeside basking in the heat are not happy.  Gardeners are bemoaning the fact that their tomatoes are very slow to ripen this summer as are other vegetables.   There is talk of an early fall and a long, cold winter.

But I don't care.  It is now cool enough for me to drag out my green fuzzy blanket at nap time.

It takes very little to make me happy.  :)

  1. Yea for the fuzzy blanket's return!

Tuesday it was in the low80s but the rest of the week it's been low 70s. I've already started cleaning up my gardens for the winter. Took out some of my squash plants already. They had nice leaves and more flowers but no fruit had set.. And it's always a race here to see if the tomatoes will ripen. Well, any bigger then a cherry tomato that is.
    Take care..SJ

  2. SJ...I read some blogs and watch some videos about gardening and it seems like many are talking about delays in tomatoes ripening as well as other vegetables like corn and squash. Most attribute it to the cool summer. As you know, in our northern climates things always ripen more slowly, but this year seems to be unusual. I don't ever remember getting out the flannel shirts in August. However, any time I can doze under my green fuzzy security blanket, I am one happy chubby granny!!

    1. deborah...I'm already seeing higher prices for fresh produce, but the meat prices - especially bacon and ham - are quickly going out of sight. Glad I canned so much while it was still lower in price.

  4. Looking forward to our cool temps for campfires. The bugs have been rough this summer so we have been putting them off. Our A/C units will be out of the windows by Oct 1st if not before.

    1. I really don't mind the cooler weather - better than hot and humid. It is nice to be able to open windows instead of using the air conditioning.

  5. We're apparently going to have a nice week here. That IS strange in August! Guess we'd better enjoy it while we can; I've seen some really sultry Septembers.

    1. Gorges...We have had some hot Septembers as well. Guess it's like they say - if you don't like the weather, just wait 10 minutes and it will change!!

  6. This is the coolest August I can remember! It is usually hot and dry, parching. I kept using my green, fuzzy blanket until the end of June. It's washed and ready to go. It was 69 at 6:30 today...think that is what my friend said.

    1. Kristina...I have only had the air conditioning on a couple of days this month. Today is a sweatshirt kind of day. Hope your tomatoes ripen better than some I have heard about.

  9. It's still hot and muggy here. But September starts next week. In reality, we will still have about six weeks of hot weather before we can really look for some cooling, but I am so looking forward to the crisp wind and cool mornings that will start in October.

    1. Truth be told, Harry, I would much rather have the fall-like weather we are experiencing now than the normal hot and muggy August. Makes me wonder what sort of fall and winter are coming up.
