I'm Still Here

It 's just that I am not doing anything blogworthy right now.

It is hot and humid here in southern Minnesota. Looks like it will stay like this for a while. Although the air conditioning in my building keeps my apartment reasonably cool, it is in my best interest to do 'quiet' things while this heat wave is upon us. Breathing issues seem to be worse when it is hot and humid. So I limit physical activity and that keeps me from huffing and puffing like an old steam engine. :)

I am ordering my groceries as usual, but am limiting my food storage items to those that do not need to be processed. On the list for next week is lots of pasta, more varieties of dry beans, more flour and possibly some chocolate that is necessary to keep me in a happy place.

So for now, I am spending time organizing several years worth of genealogy research. That is a task I have put off doing for quite some time, but recently I asked Youngest Son to drag a couple of boxes from a high shelf so I could go through them. And because my memory is not what it once was, I found all sorts of delightful surprises I had forgotten I had. Mother's high school diploma. A copy of my parent's marriage certificate. A letter written by my grandmother to my Dad in the 1920's. She tells about coming face to face with a bear while out picking blueberries. I am rather enjoying this 'quiet' time for I love going through all the material I had forgotten about.

There is still food in the freezer to can, but that will just have to wait for cooler days.

My heart goes out to those who are suffering in heat much worse than we experience here. And to those who are living with the massive western fires. I hope none of you are in the path of that destruction and I pray for the safety for those who are.

So until next time – God bless.

  1. Nothing wrong with being a steam engine, Vicki!

I'm looking at 100* here in the Wild, Wild West. It's been a HOT summer here! This is actually one of the COOLER days we've had this month!

Looking through that box of old photos and whatnot... What will the next generation say? "HEY! Here's Great Gramma's old cell phone! I wonder what's on it???" 'Just ain't the same, Vicki... 'Just ain't the same...

    1. Pete...Sounds like you are enduring hotter weather than we are. But then, we whine when it gets up to 90 degrees!

Another generation or two probably won't even be able to read the letter written 100 years ago. It is written in cursive! I don't know if anyone will even be interested in knowing those in our family who came before us, but I am really enjoying digging back into our history. No royalty or persons of fame here, but then the odd reprobate is much more interesting. :)

  2. We've had a couple pleasant days here, but I know it won't last. My young farmer-friend up in Manitoba is having problems with smoke from distant fires. I love genealogy, but have no one to pass my research on to. Take care of yourself and let us hear from you now and then.

    1. Gorges...Here in Minnesota we are seeing some hazy days from fires both west and north, but it hasn't been nearly as bad as for those closer.

I am not sure that any of my kids or grands will have any interest in family history. But I have discovered that it is OK to do this simply because it brings me joy. So research to your heart's content!

Take care, my friend. Praying for you and yours.

  3. So good to hear from you again! I am much like you. We are having heat here in Illinois also but I find late evening, when the humidity seems to drop, I can enjoy a glass of Pino on my deck, total peace ...just me and the cicadas doing their mating noises, actually quite loud at times, they are very busy now! I have stayed off line for months now..just follow a few friend's blogs. I figure when a catastrophe hits, well I'll know. I continue to "prep" every time I shop for groceries (usually monthly)by buying extras, keeping cupboards and freezer stocked. Having lived thru the '60's/'70's, '80's etc., I saw this coming. I pray constantly. That's all I can do now. Bless you, Vicki, and your family. Take care, stay safe and healthy. Thank you for blogging! It feels very good to know there are other folks out in the great beyond who know reality.

    1. lynney62...We are blessed to live in areas where even if it is hot during the day, nights tend to cool off to reasonable levels. I like late nights and early mornings for it is then that the sounds of busy town life fade away leaving my neighborhood in peaceful silence. Reminds me of childhood nights, sitting on the porch counting the stars and watching the lightning bugs.

I am a news junkie so I keep track of what is going on in the world, but I am at the place where I doubt I can do anything about the craziness. I keep on prepping anyway, for no matter what happens, I want my family to be taken care of. And I, too, pray. The politicians may think they are in charge, but we know that in the end, God decides.

We need to know there are others out there who care. I am truly grateful for those who stay in touch via this silly little blog. God bless you and yours, my friend.

    1. LindaG...Yep. The freezer food will keep until cooler weather arrives. I have to admit, however, that winter is not looking all that bad at this point. :) Take good care and God bless.

  5. Yes, breathing is a top priority. Glad you're doing quiet stuff.

On the grocery front, don't forget lentils and split peas if they're part of your supplies. Those crops are being impacted by the drought as well.

I too am chilling today. Still in recovery mode from my dental surgery Tuesday. But glad it went well and was available.
Cheers, SJ in Vancouver BC Canada

    1. SJ...We have had some hazy days due to fires north and west, but so far it hasn't been bad. My apartment stays cool and as long as I don't go nuts doing things like moving furniture, I am OK. :)

Thanks for the reminder about lentils and split peas. I have some but could stand to add more.

Good to get the dental work done now. I don't know about Canada, but here in the States there are rumors about more lockdowns. I truly hope they are just rumors. Take good care.

  6. I’ve been praying for y’all that are suffering the extreme heat and wildfires. We’ve had an unusually wet and temperate, for us, summer so far. It’s going up near 100 the next week though, which is more usual for us this time of year. It’s time to change my computer wallpapers to snow scenes ;)

Glad you’re finding interesting quiet activities. It should inspire me to do the same. I inherited boxes of memorabilia from my Mom that have just been sitting.

    Take care!

    1. LTM...So far we have been spared the awful fires others have been enduring. We are just dealing with heat and humidity. Here in Minnesota we tend to whine about our long, cold winters, but at the moment they are looking pretty good to me. :)

Boxes of family memorabilia are a treasure to anyone interested in family history. And if like me, your memory has faded some, it is like having boxes full of surprises! The old letters in particular give me an idea of what life was like for some of my ancestors. So dig in. Enjoy!
