The Sound of Rain

The building I live in was constructed in the late 1800's or very early 1900's.  There is a ledge, maybe 18 inches wide, that runs along the entire front of the building, right under my living room windows.  It serves no purpose except as an architectural design element.

It is raining today.  If I crack my windows just a bit, the sound of the rain hitting the ledge reaches my ears.  It's not as good as rain hitting a tin roof, but it will do.

Later I may have to doze in my recliner next to a window and just listen.  The sound of rain is good for the soul.

  1. We don't have any rain and only a tiny threat.

Meanwhile, the cut of beef is thawed, I have a trip to the grocery store to make and the soup should be on within two hours.

Vegetable beef is the flavor of the day and there should be plenty to freeze for the future.

  2. When my cousin first moved from rural West Virginia to suburban Atlanta in the early sixties, he missed the sound of rain on a tin roof. His solution? He found a piece of scrap tin somewhere, and when it rained, he'd lay it atop the shrubbery next to the window. He said it sounded just like home.

  3. Oh, Lordy, Jess. Does that ever sound wonderful! I'll bet I will be able to smell it simmering from here.
I canned chicken breast all day yesterday, and the two jars that didn't seal are on my menu for today. Don't know what I will do with them yet, but whatever it is, it can't possibly beat your homemade vegetable beef soup.

  4. Gorges...What a great idea. I'll bet I could find a small piece of tin and set it out on my ledge when it rains. Nobody could see it from the street and the sound of the rain hitting it would be so nice.

  5. The preparing, browning of the meat and adding the rest of the ingredients are done.

Now, it's time for the slow simmer and wait.

    It does smell wonderful.

  6. Jess...You're killing me here! You know, don't you, that now I'm going to have to go to the store one day this week for the ingredients. The memory of the smell of that simmering soup won't let me rest until I make some!

  7. Love rain. Spring cleaning all morning, now it's time for cornbread, rice and a pot beans I've had on simmer since yesterday with our Easter ham bone. Hopefully sometime this afternoon I'll be able to hit my chair too. Jess is killing me with his beef stew...

  8. Stephen...Good thing I like rain - that's what will be here all week. No spring cleaning here. Dealing with Sam's Club haul. Canning chicken breast - dehydrating hash browns - cutting up chickens for the freezer. Glad to have it. Had my beans with ham and cornbread last week. Wonderful! Will have to make a pot of beef vegetable soup, though, one day this week. Darn that Jess anyway!!

  9. Raining here too. I like to listen to it on the shakes, as long as it doesn't go on for days.

  10. Right after I commented, a few dozen drops the size of goose eggs fell, soon stopped and the sky cleared.

Off to the North, some heavy thunderstorms formed, but never came close.

As far as the soup, it came out better than I expected and there's some goodness freezing for another day.
