Just Hot

No other words describe our weather.  Yesterday we had a heat index of 110 degrees.  At 5 am today it was 80 degrees.  The central air in my building is struggling, with my apartment a few degrees warmer than the thermostat setting.

I am ready.  My fridge is stocked with bottled water and quart jars of iced tea.  Fans are set up in front of floor vents to help move the cool air.  My activities for today include reading and a little bit of computer time.  Number One Son stocked my freezer with popsicles.  As soon as I post this I will be putting into play a trick Duane learned while he worked as a restaurant cook.  I will get dishtowels wet, ring out the excess water and put them in the freezer.  One of the frozen towels applied to the back of the neck does wonders for cooling a person down.

I really feel sorry for those who need to be outside today.  Storms are predicted for this evening.  I hope they cool things down a bit.  Stay cool and safe.

  1. You would not be surprised at how many pitchers of cold water I saw the cooks at Disney down a shift. Seems like everyone had one or large glass near by. The heat was one reason all deliveries are made well before 9 am. I started work at 3 am. we finished by 11am most days.
Our 4 window units are running. The LR was at 61 yesterday, but its at 70 right now. I went outside today and its still a little sticky.

    1. Rob...I think I remember Duane (could have been David - both worked as restaurant cooks years ago) telling me that a tall glass of ice water with a lemon slice in it was good for quenching thirst. Both boys are glad they don't do that kind of work any more. Commercial kitchens in the summer can be brutal!

  2. Having a couple battery-powered fans can help if the juice goes off, too.

    1. Good idea, Gorges. I may have to add that to my "I want it" list.

  3. Stay cool, indeed.
I'll have to remember that trick about putting the towels in the freezer. Great idea.
It's drizzling here and has been for the past 3 days. The weather is more typical of our June weather then July. I'll take the change though.
Harvested strawberries, snow peas, beets, turnips and both yellow squash and zucchini the last two days.
    Cheers, SJ

    1. SJ...We had some rain come through today and that has cooled things down considerably. I didn't need to use the frozen towel this time.

Wow! Your garden is going gangbusters, isn't it! My garden envy this time is centered on your beets. I like beets, but I like the beet tops even better when cooked like spinach and drizzled with butter. (Drooling, here.) Well, the strawberries are making me hungry as well. :)

    2. It's variety, now quantity per se. Remember I plant in 18-inch rows. So, for instance, I harvested 6 beets this go around.
      Glad you could stay cool.

    1. deborah...I have not seen one of those units, but if I didn't have central air here, I would surely be looking into getting one. Glad you found a way to stay cool. The heat here has been brutal, and I hear it is even worse elsewhere.

  5. We went to our favorite island and the bartender did the very same thing. Put her wet towel in the freezer and put it on when she could. It was an outside bar and it was very hot out. They had water misters, but boy it was hot.
