Yesterday...

Duane went to physical therapy.  He has gone three times a week since he came home from the hospital after his stroke in December.  Each time, the therapist pokes his hand with something sharp to see if any of the feeling in it has returned.

Yesterday, for the first time, he said he could detect a little bit of feeling in his hand.

When you are recovering from a stroke, that is huge.

He still has a long way to go, but we are so very encouraged by this.

To all of you who have been sending good thoughts our way and to those who have been holding my son in prayer, a very heartfelt thank you.  There is power in prayer and God does hear and answer.

  1. That's wonderful news. You're right, after a stroke even a little change is a big thing. Hope the improvement continues, even if it does take a while.

  2. Answered prayer indeed.
Good for Duane to keep at the PT. I know first hand that it's a chore - had to do 5 days a week for 6 months post knee surgery back in the 1980s. I had never worked so hard to just bend my knee and walk normally. I've done PT since for different things - one being a bum shoulder that I ignored for about 6 months. I learned from that to get into PT right away. Worth every penny and the time to do it.

Sounds like you're staying cozy regardless of Murphy dealing you some new cards. I also commented on the last post. Have you test run your little propane heater? Seems like a good time to try it out.
    Cheers, SJ

    1. SJ...Duane says he hasn't worked this hard in years. They have him on all sorts of machines and doing all sorts of exercises. It seems to be paying off. The numbness in his hand and arm isn't helped by therapy. Flexibility, but not the lack of feeling. He tells me the numbness is due to the parts of his brain that were damaged by the stroke, and that needs to rejuvenate and grow around the damaged area. Sometimes that happens and sometimes not. That's why we are so excited, because that seems to be happening.

I tested the propane heater right after I got it. Don't want to be sitting in the dark trying to figure out how to work it. And Murphy? I hope to evict him soon. :)

    1. Rob...I think that has been the most frustrating part of this whole thing - losing proper use of his right hand. Thank God we are seeing a pinprick of light at the end of a dark tunnel.

  5. Vicki, your family seems to be good at taking things in stride and continuing to march. That's the way to survive the bumps in the road that nobody escapes.

    1. Harry...I guess it is a matter of priorities. At my age, I have only so much energy. I can waste it being all upset over the small stuff or I can concentrate on doing what I can for my family.

  6. Stopping by to say Hi. I was hunkered down for Sunday and Monday. Made it to the library and a very quick grocery store run this morning. I'm looking at a foot of snow in my protected side yard. It has been snowing nonstop since I woke up today. Unusual for our area. Fun when I walked MrDog since there were very few cars buzzing around. More snow is predicted and, unusual for here, it's supposed to stay around. Usually it melts off in a day or two. Not this week.

    1. My gosh, SJ...Much deeper and you will lose Mr. Dog in all that snow. :)
It has been snowing again here, too. Not lots, but enough to make traffic exciting for those who have to drive in it.
Me...I took a couple of days away from the computer - from the news, anyway - mostly because I am so very tired of 'business as usual' politics. I found some audio books on YouTube and have been enjoying listening to one (The Christmas Train by David Baldaccio) and so far, nobody is shot, stabbed or otherwise maimed, which is exactly what I was looking for. Have been doing a little crocheting and a little sewing. Got my kitchen lights back working today. Yippie!!
I will have another post in a day or so, but I just had to stay away from all the hate and discontent for a bit. Glad you commented. Always so good to hear from you.

    2. Take good care. Glad you're taking some time off. I rarely watch tv these days for the same reason.
LOL, MrDog is 26 inches to the top of his shoulder (whither?? is that term?) so the snow level has a ways to go to cover him. He's enjoying it. Cheers, SJ

  7. Another snow storm is expected some time this afternoon and into Friday. Yikes! All of our winter weather seemed to hit in the last 10 days. I took another quick trip to the store this morning to pickup this week's sale item ($11 worth) and then home. Mr Dog is fast asleep beside me. Seems to be my normal these days. I'm cozy under my fleece throw. Hope you're staying warm. Cheers, SJ

    1. SJ...Sounds like you are getting Minnesota weather! We had just a bit of snow flurries today. I haven't even looked at the forecast. Not sure I want to know. :)
I am staying warm even though the furnace still isn't working properly. Duane's apartment is still 78 degrees and mine about 65. We are threatening to cut a big hole in the wall between our apartments and set up a fan so he can share the warmth. My little space heater takes off the chill and my trusty green fuzzy blanket does the job at night. I will survive.

I need to write another post so folks don't think I dropped off the edge of the earth. Will try to do that tonite. Hope it stops snowing there before you and Mr. Dog get yourselves snowed in. Take care.
