Crime Scene

It appears my building is a crime scene.  And I missed all the excitement.

This morning my daughter came here and we went merrily on our way to Sam's Club.  An hour and a half later, when we returned, we found the door I normally use to enter the building tied off with crime scene tape.  The door was propped open.  There was a large smear of blood on the door.  There were large drops of blood outside the door on the cement.  The rug inside the doorway looked like someone had bled out on it.

Shortly after my daughter had hauled my groceries up the stairs of the second entrance to the building, one of my neighbors came knocking at my door.  It seems that the grandson of another neighbor (he is in his mid-20's) had robbed the little bar that sits behind my building.  He then ran here, trying to get in.  I don't know if he cut himself breaking into the bar or if he did it trying to break the glass on the door to my building.  But about the time the neighbor who was telling the story got home from taking her boyfriend to work this morning, the thief confronted her and threatened to kill her if she didn't let him in.  She instead called the police.  I would imagine that the thief is either at the hospital getting sewn back together or sitting in jail.

I guess you never know what is going on in the minds of people.  I had talked to this guy several times before when he had been here to see his grandmother.  He seemed a decent sort and I had never heard anything to the contrary.  I feel bad for his Grandma.  She is a widow who last year fought and won a battle with cancer that left her in a weakened condition.  She is devastated by the actions of her grandson.

It is my opinion, wounds or not, the punk should be horse whipped just for the agony he has caused that poor old lady.

  1. So very sad to hear. Do you still feel safe to live there? Just wondering. We lived in an apt in South Mpls many years ago, Lake & Pleasant. We had some drunks who fought often, and one stabbed the other. They got kicked out, but we decided that was enough for us and we headed for the country side.

  2. Rob...Thanks for your concern. This guy didn't live here. He just spent time with his grandmother who is my neighbor. When I first moved here 17 years ago, I had a drug dealer and a prostitute for neighbors. My landlord has since fired the man who was in charge of rentals and he takes care of it all himself. I have good neighbors now. I feel so sorry for the grandmother. She feels responsible somehow, even though she isn't.

  3. Chances are, it was for dope money. Once it gets a hold on some folks, they'll do ANYTHING for another fix.

  4. Gorges...I don't know if it was addiction or sheer stupidity. But whatever the reasoning was, he will probably have plenty of time to reflect on the wisdom of the choices he made.

  5. Every Wednesday evening, all across the nation, all of last weeks criminals convicted of felonies should been lined against a brick wall and shot. This action broadcast live on all television stations. Those found guilty of lesser offenses horse whipped. Imagine if you can the silence one month after the first televised program.

  6. Works for me. I'm thinking crime would nearly come to a standstill, except for the truly arrogant and stupid.

When I think about this little punk here - he stole from a good guy (I know him) who runs an honest business, he threatened the life of a woman who was just trying to go home, and he broke his grandmother's heart. Horse whipping is probably too good for him.

  7. That's the part of crime many don't think about. Somewhere, there's a family that's devastated and never really recovers.

I won't elaborate, but your post struck close to home.

  8. Jess...That's the part that I have the hardest time with. I don't know what the family circumstances are. I just know that Grandma has been there for him no matter what, and now she just sits and cries.

  9. I wouldn't blame grandma, it falls on the shoulders of the parents, if they are around. If any of my children get into trouble then I have failed as a parent. I was the one who thought them right from wrong.

  10. Rob...I agree that Grandma is in no way responsible. I don't know the parental situation, so I can't comment on that. However, this guy is not a child. He is 23 years old. Sometimes a person has parents that are less than stellar. Sometimes a person has parents who are wonderful roll models. Either way, there comes a time when a person makes his own decisions to do right or wrong. He, and no one else, is responsible for his actions.

  11. Agreed. My youngest is 15. But I still would feel that it was my responsibility to lead my 5 kids down the right path. My wife and I will also have a hand in raising our grandson.
I spent my first 6 years on this earth with my grandparents as my mom married and divorced at a young age. That I feel helped me be the man I am today.

  12. Rob...Your kids are blessed to have parents who are responsible and engaged in their lives. So many kids don't have that today.
Grandparents are an important part of kid's lives. Both my grandfathers died too young and I didn't know them, but my grandmothers both had an impact on my life. I can only hope that my grandkids will remember their Grandma in somewhat the same way I remember those loving and caring women.

  13. There's a lot of that kind of thing that goes on. This fellow sounds particularly feeble minded. Outright robbery is rare here, but breaking and entering has burgeoned into a full time industry.

  14. Harry...Must have been breaking and entering, for it was between 9 and 10 am when all of this happened. Don't think the bar was even open yet. I don't often hear of robbery here, but like your area, breaking into people's garages, homes and businesses is becoming more common. This guy should have just gone to work at his job that day, for he was an utter failure as a criminal.
