I Should Have Known...

better than to plan anything.  Went to the store yesterday for necessaries.  Was chilly outside but calm and sunny.  Woke up this morning to 25-30 mph winds and the threat of snow flurries.  Cancel the bus trip that includes standing outside waiting.

I have pretty much decided to wait until the middle of May, rent a car, take what money I have set aside to restock my pantry and do it all in a couple of days.  No waiting in the rain for a bus.  No limits on the amount I can carry home at one time.  Sounds good to me.

I figure that what I spend on a rental car for two days doesn't even come close to what it would cost me in car payments, license, insurance, tires, gas and upkeep to own a car.  And I could get to stores I have been wanting to visit that aren't on the bus route.  Aldis has good buys most of the time and Fleet Farm carries canning jars and Foodsaver bags for less than anywhere else.  But I can't get to either by bus.

Now if I can just find a pack mule to haul stuff up the stairs to my apartment.....

  1. Pack Mule = Grandchildren, reward ice cream bars...

Set up a pulley system out the front window or back, use you little cart. Just hook up a drill to power the pulleys. HAhaha

  2. Thanks, Rob. I needed a laugh today!! I know that all I have to do is ask and help will arrive! I like the pulley thing, tho!

  3. Sounds like you have a plan :)

How many bus trips would it take you to bring home all the goods you plan on buying? You can deduct that cost from the car rental expense too :)

  4. I agree that vehicles are expensive to operate and maintain. Living so far out in the woods as I do, I have no choice. But if I could ride a bus, I think I might. If you had to get out of there in a hurry do you have friends you could ride with though?

  5. Dani.....I've been considering the car rental thing for a while. I have done it in the past when I wanted to go out of town, and the cost isn't prohibitive. I think I'm just out of patience with our weather and want to get this done. I wouldn't even like to think about how many bus trips it would take. Lots!

  6. Harry.....Normally I don't mind the bus ride at all. But what with the weather here lately, seems like whenever I plan a day out, Mother Nature tosses a monkey wrench into the works!! I'm out of patience! I want to replenish my pantry before prices go even higher.
I won't, however, buy a car. Living in town I don't have to. And living on my fixed income, I can either own a car with all of the expense, or eat. Without the added expense, I can live a bit and not just exist.
I have 4 kids living close. If I need to get out they would be here in a heartbeat. I know I can count on any or all of them.

  7. Dangle a fresh buttered piece of cornbread in my face and I'll play pack mule. You need a nice bike with front and rear baskets...or better yet, a big adult three wheeler with same.

  8. Stephen.....The buttered cornbread - done! The bike - not so much. I'll stick with my handy dandy little old lady shopping cart for groceries and get my exercise walking Jessie Jane along the river.

  9. Mary.....I had to think about it for a while because the idea was born out of my impatience!! But the notion of getting the bulk of my pantry filled before prices go any higher appeals to me. Even figuring in the cost of a car rental, I believe I will still save money in the long run. Food prices here are increasing by leaps and bounds.
