I am about halfway finished with my grandson's graduation afghan. I'm afraid I will have to send my daughter Jill back to the yarn store as I am running out of one color and will likely need more of a couple of colors to complete the border. Jill is very good at picking out colors of yarn for me to turn into beautiful afghans. I warned her that when I am ready to make the three graduation afghans I have left to make, I will just send her to the store and let her choose the yarn.
Jill proved her taste in choosing yarn at Christmas. She gave me two very large gift bags full of these beauties.
She said that after making afghans for the grands, I might enjoy making one just for me. She was right!
I couldn't stand having that yarn just sitting in the bags without applying a crochet hook. After a bit of experimenting I came up with this design for the granny squares.
I found that the variegated yarn showed up better sandwiched between the solid gray than next to the teal. True colors don't always show in photos. The blue is a lovely teal color. The yarn is soft to the touch and will make up into a cuddly afghan just right for afternoon naps.
So thanks again, Jill. This one is going to be fun. :)

Excellent colour choices, that variegated yarn is so pretty. It been stay on the couch afghan weather around here!
ReplyDeleteJenn...I love the colors, too! We are having couch afghan weather as well. Only minus 9 degrees at noon. Glad I don't have to go out. I vote for a flannel jammies and hot chocolate kind of weekend. :)
DeleteVery pretty. None of my relatives knitted or crocheted, they all quilted.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Gorges...It was the other way around in my family. Nobody quilted except Grandma who made plain quilted blankets. Mother crocheted, but only made those fancy doilies. Have no idea where my love of needlework came from. :)
DeleteBeautiful!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mary. The credit goes to my daughter who picked out such lovely yarn.
DeleteGreat colors, indeed. Love that new granny-square.
ReplyDeleteStaying inside as well. It's chilly and raining here. However, we didn't get the snow that's falling about 40minutes east of here.
I'm feeling better after this flu bug but not 100% yet. Toast and jello are still what I'm eating.
Cheers, SJ
SJ...I like the colors and the resulting square, too. I think this one will be fun to make.
DeleteHere the rain and ice and snow have stopped, leaving us with temps barely above zero, getting down to below zero at night. Glad the snow missed you. Snow makes things interesting, not necessarily for the better.
Also glad you are getting better, even if it is a slow process. Hope food will appeal to you soon. You are going to waste away to nothing if it doesn't. Wish I lived closer so I could bring you a pot of chicken soup, guaranteed to cure all ills. :)
Your chicken soup would be welcome.Smile.
DeleteI'm doing much better today, thanks for the kind words. No Jello, yea!
SJ
SJ...No Jello! Woot, woot! Keep me posted. I worry about you.
DeleteLooks great...Jill has a good eye for color and you have good eye for design. That is going to be a very handsome afghan. Take care!
ReplyDeleteThanks, carol fun...I think I will just have Jill pick out colors for any future projects. She is so much better at it than I am. I might have to work on the new afghan now and then before I finish the graduation afghan for my grandstand. Those colors keep calling my name. :)
DeleteIt looks beautiful. What a cherished gift.
ReplyDeleteKristina...Jill is really good at gifts that give me something to do. She knows how I can't stand to be idle. I will post pictures when it is finished, but that may take a while. :)
DeleteI like afghans. They make great decorations to put on the backs of recliners and couches. I like to poke around Thrift Stores, and there is always a big supply of yarn to be had at those.
ReplyDeleteHarry...I like afghans, too. And handmade quilts. They give a room a cozy, homey look. I prefer the rustic look rather than the fancy, guilded look. I can't get out to thrift stores any more, but I am saving all the bits and bobs left over from the afghans. Eventually I will have enough to make one of those multi-colored ones like Grandma had.
DeleteWow, so very beautiful. My grandma, dads mom, did that stuff. My mom no interest, my wife zero, same for my girls. Oh well. Your a fading breed of craftsmen
ReplyDeleteThank you, Rob...My daughters have zero interest in learning the old crafts. Me...I have always enjoyed making useful things like quilts and afghans. I find it sad that so many of the old time skills are being lost.
DeleteNeither daughter crochets or knit. The older girl (48) won't even look at a machine or a needle to sew on a button. the younger daughter (42) did keep the sewing machine I gave her and sewed as a teen. Now? I don't know. My mother only ever recovered a quilt her grandmother made. We sandwiched it between two other pieces of material and used yard to made little tied tufts to hold all together. I crochet and have dabbled in quilt piecing. I love needlepoint. I have plans to revive some of these for Christmas gifts next year.
