have found their way into my kitchen. Oldest Son and his friend made a Farmer's Market run earlier today. The tomatoes are gorgeous - not a bad one in the bunch and at just the right ripeness. I sent some home with Son and I'm saving out half a dozen to eat. I thought $15 per 25 lb. box was a pretty good price. Tomatoes are being turned into juice as we speak. I'll be back tomorrow when I have them all canned up.
I just love these locally grown tomatoes.

Have you ever heard of the freezer method of making juice?
ReplyDeleteGorges...I have frozen tomatoes before when I had too many to deal with at one time, but I didn't know there was a freezer method of making juice.
ReplyDeleteI didn't think that I was going to find this, but I did. I guess the juice was a by-product of making sauce, but here's the link so you can see if it's something you want to try: http://www.motherearthnews.com/real-food/seasonal-recipes/tomato-puree-zm0z12aszhun.aspx
ReplyDeleteThanks, Gorges...I'm making juice out of the whole works this time, but I have bookmarked that link. It might be something I would try next time.
ReplyDeleteTomato juice is a favorite - especially during the Winter!
ReplyDeleteI have been searching for edible tomatoes in the "garden" being grown with tax dollars on our school campus. Since they are too organic to use pesticides and to lazy to stake the plants it is a contest between me and the bugs. I can assume that if it looks like a beauty on the top it will be eaten out on the bottom. I am finding that I need to pick them while they are still a bit green and then leave them on my kitchen table to get ready to eat. It reminds me every time I walk by it that if we go back to organic farming the only ones who will eat well are the bugs.
ReplyDeleteGrace and peace.
Chickenmom...Tomato juice is a favorite of mine, too. And I use my home canned juice in recipes that call for tomato sauce. Win...win!
ReplyDeletePumice...I am in agreement with your comment about growing organic. The vendor we buy tomatoes from makes no such claims and has the best produce around. Add to that the fact that if these tomatoes were organically grown, I could not afford to buy them. I am in no way a fan of overkill where pesticides are concerned, but neither am I in favor of raising crops just to provide a banquet for the bugs.
