  4. Hope you had a nice Independence Day.

I just got in from the gardens. Probably did too much but I had fun. Harvested shelling peas and garlic scapes at one; the last of the lettuce and garlic at another. Watered like crazy as the temps are going up and we're heading into a 'heat' wave, at least for here it's a heat wave.
About my health. I have this diagnosis called Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). In very rare cases it can become life threatening but I'm no where near that. About 1 in 4 are bedridden - I'm no where near that bad either. But if I do too much or am active too many days in a row, I feel punk and like I have the flu. There are other symptoms, but that's the gist of it. This all may be too much for your blog but I wanted to respond to one of your last comments.
Today is a good day, though.
    Take care -- SJ

    1. SJ...It was a nice day at home. I don't do crowds any more so at home suits me just fine. We have had a string of pleasant days, but are now heading back toward the heat wave range. I won't be doing any baking for awhile - at least not until it cools down some.

Thank you for explaining your medical problems. I knew that for you, overdoing it makes for days of rest. But sometimes, with friends, it makes understanding easier when you have the facts. I tend to worry about those who visit here, especially if we have gone back and forth in the comments like we do, so it is reassuring to know that even though you have a medical issue that is no fun at all, you are not dealing with life threatening issues. I am really glad that your CFS doesn't keep you from doing the things you love, like gardening. Don't concern yourself about your comment being too much for this blog. The only thing I consider 'too much' are the rare, nasty comments, and those I just delete.

Oddly enough, your CFS and my arthritis seem to act similar in that those days I overdo it make it necessary to rest for a couple of days. I have joint pain and all I want to do is sleep. After which I am back to whatever normal is. :) It is those good days that keep life worth living, isn't it.

  6. Thanks, Jenn...My family usually doesn't get together on the 4th of July. Some picnic, some spend a day at the lake and others go watch fireworks. I spent the day putzing about at home, which suits me just fine. :)

  7. Yes, normal is a relative thing these days. My normal is a very low key life. Back in the day, I used to run at full speed with my hair on fire. No more, and that's just fine. I'm still learning about my limitations and that's ok. I am thankful that I don't usually have pain associated with my fatigue. I truly believe that God will not give me more then I can handle and for that I am grateful. Thanks for the encouragement to share, I really appreciate that.
And, yes, I love my gardens. Picked a bowl full of shelling peas today - the first real harvest this year. I made a pasta salad with shell pasta, mandarin oranges, garbanzo beans, snow peas and fresh peas. I had a bottled vinaigrette type dressing that was very light. Yum.
I also picked garlic scapes, garlic and the last head of lettuce. I split the latter with one of my neighbors. It still amazes me how much I can get from these little community garden plots.
Take care with the coming heat. Our weather is warming up as well. Cheers, SJ

    1. SJ...My normal is similar to your normal. And I, too, am ok with that. Full speed - hair on fire - yup. Remember those days well. I think I am glad those days are behind me. Now I have time for what is important to me. I agree about God giving us no more than we can handle, although once in a great while I sort of wish He would lower His expectations. :)

I am glad you feel comfortable enough to share. Sometimes it helps to be able to talk to someone who understands about limitations. I have found that many times when there is no obvious reason, folks have no idea of what is going on with us. If someone saw me sitting on a chair and couldn't see my bandaged legs or see the way I walk, they would not have a clue to my physical condition, other than I am old. That's obvious. :)

I really love hearing about your gardening efforts. When I could no longer garden, I was afraid that some jealousy might rear its ugly head when I read about others gardens, but that has not happened. It just brings back good memories of the huge gardens I had when my kids were young. And of the hours I spent digging in the dirt. I suppose it helps that I am still able to preserve produce, even if it comes from the Farmers Market. Your salad sounds absolutely wonderful! Isn't it fun that you raised much of the ingredients yourself.

According to the forecast, today was the warmest day in a 7 day stretch, at 90 degrees. I can live with that if the humidity stays fairly low. At any rate, I have nothing spectacular planned this week. I just love retirement!
