from "Spinster Stitcher". I found her in the sidebar of "The Polka Dot Chicken," a blog that I adore. I have been known to spend a considerable amount of time browsing through the 'Chicken' posts, drooling over her beautiful pictures of all things quilty and stitchy. Her sidebar is loaded with more of the same.
Anyway, when I saw this picture...
made me laugh and it so reminded me of the crowd that would gather whenever I was stirring up goodies to bake. When you have four children who were born within six years and they are all waiting for the beaters, it seems like a crowd. Two got one beater each. Two got spoons and the bowl. Everybody was happy.
I think the world might be a happier place if we all had beaters to lick. :)

ReplyDeleteMy mom used to tell me about all the home baked goodies she made for my brother and sister. As I ate store bought. I was her 3rd - with many many years between.
SJ
SJ...Store bought - that's just not right. :)
DeleteI guess as time passes, so does the desire to make all the goodies we did when younger. I don't bake nearly as much as I did when the kids were young - mostly because I eat it and then wind up sitting on it!!
I remember the days!
ReplyDeleteGorges...My son just left and he said he remembered those beater licking days. Now he is diabetic and can't indulge. Life just isn't fair sometimes. I said he had already exceeded his quota with all the raw cookie dough he stole out of the bowl as a kid. :)
DeleteI had two who were two years apart. they each got a beater. I got the bowl. Then, I had another five years after the second. I would take a spoon and rub it around the bowl for her. I got the bowl...lol. Eventually, I lost the bowl, but I swiped a finger in there first, and licked my finger.
ReplyDeleteLinda...I'm as bad as the kids. I still can't resist licking the beaters or cleaning out the bowl. :)
DeleteI remember waiting for the beaters! Must have been at my grandmas. My mom didn't spend a lot of time in the kitchen. I also remember that I liked using a spatula to get every last bit of batter from the bowl.
ReplyDeleteJenn...I have to confess to still using a spatula to get the last drop from the bowl. I know I am supposed to be all grown up, but I am still a kid when it comes to beaters and bowls. :)
DeleteMy mom would let us lick the beaters. We knew the best was yet to come.
ReplyDeleteJess...The dough is good, but nothing beats chocolate chip cookies fresh from the oven. Or peanut butter cookies. Or gingersnaps. :)
DeleteYum raw cookie dough. My DDIL and I were chatting one day. The youngest had made cookies with her Mama. I said "oh yum who got to lick the beaters?" DDIL said "no one you can get sick eating raw eggs."
ReplyDeleteI felt very sad for my two grand girls. Good thing they have a Grammie who bakes, serves up raw batter on beaters and has her own chickens.
Goatldi...Good for you, Grammie!! It is up to us to make sure our grands get to enjoy some of the simple pleasures like licking the beaters. Sometimes I think our grands are so overprotected that life isn't nearly as much fun for them as it was for us.
ReplyDeleteHa ha! I always let the birthday girl lick the beaters after frosting was made. Yum.
ReplyDeleteKristina...Isn't it funny how a silly little sign can bring back memories? It is nice when the memories are good ones, like licking beaters.
DeleteHi Vicki...thanks for the lovely comment about my blog... that is so sweet of you! And I love that pic from Spinster Stitcher...I don't know what there is about licking the beaters but EVERYONE loves to do it, don't they? Lucky for me I had just 2 kids so they each got one... and I got the bowl!! Take care...hugs!
ReplyDeletecarol fun...You are welcome. I don't often comment like I should, but I truly enjoy seeing all that needlework goodness on your blog.
DeleteThe only time I got to lick the beaters was if I did my baking while the kids were in school. Otherwise, I didn't have a chance. :)
I can remember being a kid, and waiting in the kitchen when my mom made cakes. I got to "lick the spoon" and "scrape out the bowl." She used a big wooden spoon to beat the batter.
ReplyDeleteHarry...I remember using a big wooden spoon to beat batter before my family got an electric mixer. I still often use one rather than go to the trouble of getting the mixer out of the cupboard. I sometimes think it is the memories like these that keep me grounded while the world around me falls apart.
DeleteI loved licking the beaters, now I have to fight off everyone else....Stay Warm young lady.
ReplyDeleteRob...These days I can lick the beaters and clean out the bowl, but it was more fun when I had a passel of kids around arguing about whose turn it was to get the beaters. :)
DeleteAbout the only thing I have left to do to get ready for the snow and cold is to make up a big batch of hot chocolate mix. A cup of hot chocolate seems to keep the cold away!
