DIY Hand Sanitizer

Just a quick post about hand sanitizers.  I have been hearing that hand sanitizers have been flying off the shelves due to the virus outbreak.  A friend confirms this as she has had trouble finding some in Canada.

I stumbled onto this video this morning that shows how to make your own.  The lady in the video is a bit chatty, but eventually gets to the part on how to make it.  It is a simple process using 1/3 Cup of Aloe Vera Gel and 2/3 Cup of at least 70% rubbing alcohol, both of which I think are still available.  At least they are still in the stores in my area.

Just wanted to pass this along to anyone who might be interested.  I plan to give it a try.

Time for me to get back to work.  Later....

  1. Thank you, Vicki. I'll keep this little recipe in my prepping handbook. I just purchased more of both ingredients. Take care, CW

    1. You are welcome, CW. When I saw the video this morning, I thought it was worth taking the time to post about it. I will be ordering both next week. You take care, too!

  2. Thanx, Vicki. I'm gonna give that a try as well. Of course, that does mean I'm going to have to enter that great Petri dish... you know... Wal-Mart... again...

Just THINKING of that place makes me feel the need to shower...

    1. Pete...There are very few good things about being housebound. But one is that I am already nearly self-quarantined. The other is that I get my stuff delivered and don't have to go to that giant Petri dish! When I was still able to do my own shopping, I went in the middle of the night when there were only 3 stock boys, 1 clerk and maybe 3 other customers. Good luck!

  3. I went to four stores this morning to get isopropyl alcohol & aloe vera gel. Got the last aloe vera gel a the $ store; no alcohol on the shelves. Walmart was bare of both as were Safeway & Sprouts. Thankfully, I just bought 91% alcohol a couple of weeks ago (1 pt size). Will make hand sanitizer for kids & grands. Will add some essential oil to cut the ETOH smell! NO hand sanitizer on any store shelves here in Phoenix. Thankfully, we are always a strict hand washing crew!!! Keep Prepping!

    1. Nursejoan...I wonder if those items are less available in areas where cases of the virus have been reported. Here in Minnesota, nobody is owning up to any active cases. Could be because so very few are being tested. At any rate, I will find out for sure what the situation is here when I order Monday for grocery delivery on Thursday. Good luck and for sure, keep on prepping!!

  4. Thanks for the post here.
No rubbing alcohol here for weeks. Just did a google search about using vodka as a disinfectant. One result reported that vodka at 99.3% strength is flying off the shelves in Japan. Will do some shopping tomorrow.
    Cheers, SJ in Vancouver BC

    1. SJ...Looks like panic buying is spreading far and wide! I saw a news report this evening where people were hauling TP out of Costco stores by the truck load. It is good to know that vodka can be used instead of rubbing alcohol for sanitizer. Good luck on your shopping trip!

  5. We are shopping at WM saturday. I'm going to check out the sanitizer, exam gloves, and dust masks. To see if the shelves are empty or what.

    1. Rob...Please let me know what you find. I haven't heard any reports of shortages here, but if that is happening elsewhere, it wouldn't surprise me if it happens here as well.
