Are We Ready?

Several people I know have made last minute shopping trips just in case the post election violence threatened by the left leaning crazies comes to pass.  My last grocery order filled in most of the gaps in my food storage.  My order for this week includes fresh fruit and vegetables and items that I would like to have but can live without should the delivery become impossible.  I have also decided to wait on ordering a couple of items online, for the same reason.  If the promised chaos happens, who knows what might happen to my order.

And isn't it sad that we are not only held hostage by a pandemic that isn't, but also by those who wish to rip apart a perfectly good nation.  Never in my lifetime have I seen such complete insanity and such efforts to try to keep 'we the people' under the thumbs of those who think they know better than we do on how we need to live our lives.  A pox on them all.

In the meantime, life goes on here in my little corner of the world.  Having put off cleaning out my chest freezer for about as long as I could, that is happening now.  I found several freezer bags full of homemade vegetable soup that I thawed and canned, giving me 7 quarts to add to the shelves.  The closer I get to the bottom, the more I am finding stuff that has lived there far too long.  Several bags of squash had to be tossed as well as a badly freezer burned pizza.  Being only a couple of inches over 5 feet tall, reaching the bottom of the freezer is a challenge, but thankfully there is one long, tall son living next door who says he will drag out the rest of what is left in the bottom.

While waiting to see what our future holds, I have been having a bit of fun.  A friend sent me some packets of micro greens seeds and I planted one of them in a shoebox size container of potting soil.  Looks to be about a gazillion tiny plants growing and when they are big enough I will snip them off and use them in a salad.

I also dehydrated six bunches of celery last week, so I saved the root ends and set them in another shoebox size plastic container, adding about an inch and a half of water.  I now have celery growing from all six roots, the largest stalks being about 4 inches tall.  I think I will just leave them alone, adding water when needed, and see just how tall they will grow.

It obviously takes very little to amuse me.  :)

I pray the promised riots do not happen, but I am not counting on it.  Many are taking the threat seriously.  It is reported that Texas has the National Guard on standby in the largest cities.  I have seen reports of other states doing the same.  All across the country store owners are busy boarding up their windows.  Some governors and mayors have recommended that stores stay closed on election day.  If that many folks are taking the threat seriously, we will do the same.

Thankfully, we are stocked well enough to hunker down for a long time, if necessary.  I pray that things stay calm and peaceful, but judging by what this year has already given us, I am not counting on it.

Stay as safe as possible, my friends.  Most of us have been prepping for whatever crisis happens.  It is my personal belief that we are on the threshold right now.  I really hope I am wrong.

  1. Hello Vicki~ I hope this day finds you well.
I was going through and making notes on items we might need. Then my Husband said "Where's the cat litter?" OOPS. With 3 kitties, that is an essential product. So now there is 120 pounds of litter in my trunk. Plus some more canned and dry cat food. While I was being checked out the clerk was asking if I had heard about the lab grown animal food. I said yes and it sounded as if centuries of what animals eat was not good enough, and needed to be done away with. ARRGGH. I'm going to try the celery root experiment, I'll be drying celery tonight when it is cool. Look at the small things that most overlook until it is too late. Pray. Trust in the Lord. Red

    1. All is well here in my little corner of the world, Red...I pray you can say the same.
Having had several cats living with me over the years, I would say that litter is almost as important as is food. I had not heard about lab grown animal food, but I have seen ads and articles about things like plant based chicken nuggets and burgers now on the market. I'm pretty sure you have seen Ice Age Farmer's videos on the subject of lab grown people food. Personally, I can find nothing wrong with the food we have been eating for centuries.
The celery experiment seems to be successful. It will be interesting to see how well it continues to grow.
Take care, Red. We here keep praying for a good outcome to the insanity.

    1. Agreed, Gorges...But I do have this sneaking suspicion that we are about to be spanked for allowing our country to stray so far away from the principals on which it was founded.

    2. Indeed, Gorges, but even the Jews had to slather lamb's blood on the doorposts and hunker down to avoid what happened to the Egyptians...

Vicki, I see EXACTLY the same thing in the offing...

    3. Pete...We as a nation have had plenty of time to do what we need to do, but I see very little repenting or humbling or turning from wicked ways. I see two options. Either God will bring his wrath down on a disobedient people or He may show mercy and give us another chance. Me...I will pray and wait it out.

  4. I guess we are about as ready as we will ever be for what is about to happen. Food, water, warm clothing and shelter, medicine and a few self- defense items are checked off on my list of must have items. Now it is time to vote and then wait to see what happens next. Let's hope that those of us who are expecting some fireworks are terribly disappointed. I would be thrilled to find out that I was wrong.

Also, just thought I would mention that you may need to plant your up and growing celery in a pot of soil to keep it going. I have done this before and it seems that it will only live in the water for so long. There is quite a lot of information provided online. Have fun! 😊

Stay safe everyone and pray often...CW

    1. CW...We are about as ready as we can be just now, too. I also hope we are wrong about what the future holds, but if not, the years of preparing are paying off. I pray it doesn't come to the time when we have to depend on our preps. But if it does, we can manage for a long time.

Thanks for the information about the celery. I have more potting soil so I will get the plants into dirt and see what happens. The micro greens are growing like mad and I expect they will be ready for a taste before long. I miss gardening so very much, so I am having such fun with watching these plants grow. :)

Take good care and stay safe.

  5. Not as ready as you, but better than I was. My new chest freezer is pretty full. My pantry is full. I made a shopping trip Saturday and picked up extras, in addition to my normal stuff. I have 3 months of dog food on hand. We are going to fill up our car with gas early tomorrow.

    1. One Family...Keep in mind that it has taken me many years to get to this point. You are miles ahead of those who continue to ignore what is happening and who think they don't need to bother preparing because government will take care of them. I pray that calm prevails, but if it doesn't, those folks will soon be in a world of hurt. It is those like you who pick up the extras and remember that their pets need to eat too, who will come out the other side of any emergency intact. God bless.

  6. We're about as "self-contained" as we can be, out here in the Wild, Wild West, Vicki. We're pretty much topped off. I pray this turns out to be a tempest in a teapot. Better to be prepared and not need the preps than vice versa... God be with you and yours!

    1. Pete...Here we are in a somewhat dicey position, living about 25 miles out of the city. So far, however, none of the craziness has reached this neighborhood, and we can stay put for a relatively long time if necessary. I, too, pray that this is nothing more than scare tactics, but if it isn't, we are as ready as we can be. God bless you and yours, my friend. Stay safe!

  7. Vicki, glad you’re set up and ready to hunker down. We did what I’m afraid may be our last grocery run for awhile this morning. The store did not seem unusually busy so it seems that perhaps folks are not taking things as seriously as we are.

We picked up 40 lbs of cat food to add to the preps yesterday and 80 lbs of cat litter last weekend. So we and our 3 kiddos should be set. I, too, am praying this is much ado about nothing (like the Y2K) but I don’t think so.

    Stay safe, everyone.

    1. LTM...In my opinion, those who pay attention to what is going on around us are the ones who did grocery store and supply runs the past few days to top off their preps. The rest are oblivious, or so it would seem. Good on you for taking the threats of violence seriously and for remembering that our furry friends need to be taken care of as well.

I pray that all of this insanity will pass, but the realist in me says it is unlikely. Uncertain times like these is why we prep. Take care and stay safe!

  8. For once in my life I am scared. Its the unknown. I sent my son a message today saying no matter what happens I love him, and wished him a happy birthday early. I have a feeling our internet and cell phones are going down in the next 24 to 36 hours.

One thing for sure our country will never be the same again..I just want to thank you for your friendship the last few years..

    1. Rob, pray like your life and our Country depend upon it. It is truly in God's hands at this point. Stay safe...

    2. Rob...Don't give up. We can make it through no matter what happens. We are a lot stronger than the enemy on the left gives us credit for. We are smarter than the enemy on the left gives us credit for. After all, we have been preparing for times just like these. Many like us are planning to just hunker down and wait to see what happens.

Listen to CW's advice. And just so you know - friendships take two people who care about one another. Friendships are not one-sided. Stay safe and stay in touch.

  9. Checked in with two friends both reporting another run on TP where the shelves were empty at Sams, Costco and Frys/Kroeger. One friend lives in Phoenix AZ and one in the CentralValley, CA.
    Thankful for my 'pantry'.
    Praying without ceasing today.

    1. SJ...Can't say as I am surprised to hear of more panic buying of TP. I know of several folks who made grocery runs to top off their supplies because of the threats of election day violence. Some may think we are crazy for keeping such deep pantries, but we are not the ones rushing out at the last minute to fill car trunks with TP. :)
I think there are many who are deep in prayer today and for the days to come. I don't suppose our elections affect Canada very much, but those of us here in the States appreciate prayers from all corners. We will need all the help we can get. Take care.
