AWOL

Yes, I know it has been a while since my last post.  I sorta got busy.  No excuse.  Just fact.

I began canning again this week.  I was running low on chicken canned in half pint jars, so 16 of them were processed this afternoon.  Tomorrow - 4 lbs. of carrots.  After that - 18 lbs. of hamburger.

I have several unfinished projects - mostly quilts - that need to be finished.  Should have been done by now.  Especially since snow and then below zero temps are on the way for Minnesota.

I have discovered there are a vast number of people who are clueless about the state of affairs here in the USA.  Some doctors are among those.  Had a phone appointment with mine last week.  It has been my experience over the years that at nearly every appointment, there are suggestions for changes in my diet.  Apparently, Cheetos and Oreo cookies are not on the favored list. This time fresh fruits and vegetables along with lean meats were suggested.  Also I was to eliminate pasta and bread.

He got sort of grumpy when I reminded him of the price of groceries and suggested that if he expected me to dine on fresh food, perhaps he would be willing to foot the bill.  And because I had the good sense to stock up on flour and yeast, bread was one item I could afford to make.

Anybody else failing to recognize our country any more?  I just don't get it.  When exactly did much of the population become stupid?  Why do so many think it is OK to chop off body parts and pretend that men are women and that women can become men.  When did so many of the younger generation decide that socialism is a good thing.  And why, in the name of all that is holy, did patriotism beome a bad thing!

I don't know where all of this foolishness is leading, but my tendency is toward non-compliance.  I am a grumpy old woman, after all!  There is not one single person in any form of government who knows better than me how to live my life.   But they continue to try.  It is called control.  Nope.  Not buying into it.

I can't change much.  But I can continue to prepare.  Seems like now, more than ever, the importance of stacking it to the rafters is essential.  So is prayer.  Often.

Take good care, my friends.  I think that cliff is dead ahead and close.

  1. Hi Vicki, I was wondering about you this morning when I was waiting for my coffee to brew. I hope your holidays were good!

We were blessed this year by visits from my stepdaughter, and then my son. We also had an unwelcome visitor: whatever flu bug is going around right now. While more of a nuisance than anything, it did sort of limit my "hostess with the most-est" abilities.

As far as the state of the world, I spend a lot of time shaking my head in disbelief! It's to the point that preparation and prayer are my focus.

    1. sbrgirl...My Christmas was lovely with visits from family. I have never been much for New Years celebrations, but did look at a few fireworks displays on my computer.

So far I have escaped the yearly flu bug and whatever virus those in charge seem to expect us to fear. Hope the bug pestering you goes elsewhere!

Knowing that nothing I say matters to those in charge both nationally and locally, I just keep doing what I can to make sure my family is taken care of no matter what happens. We continue to focus on what is important, my friend.

  2. Agreed on the food topic. But honestly, the 'homemade' bread is so vastly different from any of the store bought versions that it IS healthy and filling - no guilt! We are currently doing 'living 100% on food storage' and every day I make a new loaf of homemade bread or turn it into buns, rolls, pizza dough, etc. I say "thank you for our daily bread!" and mean it. :)

    1. American Housewife...I had become kind of lazy and had not baked bread in a while. But when I saw the price of one store brand loaf was $4, and being frugal (OK - cheap), the bread machine came off the shelf and is now used at least once a week. One batch of dough makes 3 loaves and the second batch turns into buns and rolls. And now I am also very thankful for my daily bread. And I don't care what the doctor says about eliminating bread from my diet - not gonna happen!

  3. Vicki, have you ever considered making sourdough bread? It's a healthier choice than regular bread and doesn't spike blood sugars as high as regular bread will do. I've been making (and loving!) it for the past three months. And it's much cheaper--no oil, eggs, milk, sweetener, or yeast. I can send you a dehydrated start if you would like.

    1. Jennifer...I have often thought I should try sourdough bread, but just haven't. Seems to me that it would be another way to keep family fed should the need arise. I didn't know that sourdough starter could be dehydrated. Cool! I would truly appreciate receiving some. Please email me at vickimiller63@gmail.com. And thank you for your kind offer!

  4. Atta Girl -- my thoughts as well. Just back from the store - not.a fresh veg or fruit in the shopping bag. And the total at the cash register was eye opening. How are families managing? Waving pom pots for your canning project. Cheers, SJ now in California

    1. SJ...I don't know how families - especially those who aren't into raising chickens or growing vegetables or preparing in general. It's gotta be tough!
Thanks for the cheerleading pom poms! Just doing what needs to be done, knowing that most who stop by here are doing the same in their own way. Take care.

  5. I have one comment about the young and socialism. To quote a 30ish family member " anything the WWW knows about him that makes his life easier is great. So status quo is the effortless name of the game. But to be fair they have had no education in our countries history. NONE!

    1. I get the same from my "30-somethings" when I point out the self-inflicted surveillance they click "ACCEPT" for. They don't seem to realize, and there's no explaining to them, that the path of least resistance always ends at the bottom...

    2. I heartily agree with you both. And I don't have any answers to change the way they think. Pray for them. They are going to need all the help they can get if this downward spiral continues.

  6. Vicki, I sometimes need to step back and wonder how, in one generation, we've gone from freedom to serfdom. The sad thing is, this can't be explained to the young, as they've never known the America we grew up in. It's like describing colors to Helen Keller.

For the record, I'm not buying into the "new normal" either, Vicki. If that makes me a criminal, then so be it. "Life sentence" just doesn't scare me the way it used to...

    1. Pete...I'm not sure I know what happened, either. Seems like common sense has been wadded up in a ball and tossed in the trash. Looks like schools are more interested in teaching gender inclusiveness and proper pronoun use than they are the American Revolution or the Civil War or Pearl Harbor. I can't really blame those brainwashed kids too much. I do blame those in power who tell the kids that yes, men are capable of giving birth.

A life sentence really isn't much of a deterrent anymore, is it! I'm pretty sure you have hung out here long enough to pick up on the fact that I don't do well at being told what to do. "Nope. Not gonna do that." is mostly my battle cry. What I can't figure out is why there aren't more people on this particular bandwagon!
