One of the Good Ones has Passed

I was today informed by one of my readers that one of my favorite bloggers has gone on to his Heavenly Reward.  Gorge Smythe of "Gorge's Grouse" fame has passed.

I have followed Gorges for a number of years, commenting on his blog and he, commenting on mine, with an occasional email thrown in for good measure.

He described himself as an opinionated curmedgeon.  He was.  And he also had a sense of humor second to none.  His antics often brought not only a smile to my face, but laughter as well.

I never knew what his dog's real name was, for he always referred to her as "The Mighty Dachshund."  But within his writings was the love he felt for the long bodied, short legged pooch.

Gorges shared his family with us, as well as the beauty of his home state of West Virginia.  Through his porch sitting posts, he brought his world to us.  And I am forever grateful to him for that.

I will miss him.

  1. May he rest in peace. I sure liked his blog; and it was a first read when he posted.

  2. I have wondered at his absence in my blog readings. Thank you for sharing this and I hope he is still telling things “like they are, or should be” to a heavenly audience.

    1. "Like they are, or should be" pretty much sums it up. I once told him that I wanted him to look me up when we both got there. Sure hope he does.

  3. His obituary was published in our local newspaper Feb. 6th. If you are interested, or any one else is, I can give you the name of newspaper and his name to look for. It was only by chance that I recognized it.
I too enjoyed reading his blog and by his comments about his surroundings, I suspected his whereabouts. I was right. He was in West Virginia, and I am in Ohio. I thought it right to notify his online friends of the news. I will miss him, too.

  5. Sure thing. The Parkersburg News and Sentinel Tuesday Feb. 6,2024. The funeral home may also have a page where condolences may be offered to his family and friends. I have been a follower of both Moms Scribbles and Georges Grouse for quite a while (silently). Enjoyed both.
His name is Ulysses Dye III. RIP

  7. This is sad, Vicki. I followed Gorges for quite some time. He wasn't the same after his wife died, as is so often the case with us men. I knew something was up lately though, when his posts got shorter or were altogether absent. I'm sorry to see him go...

...On the upside, Gorges has gone from reminding us of the country we USED to live in, to Heaven, where those of us with faith LONG to be...

    Will the circle be unbroken,
Bye and bye Lord bye and bye.
    There’s a better home a waiting,
In the sky Lord in the sky...

  8. Pete...I noticed by what he said that his health was failing. I didn't realize it was as bad as it was.

I once joked with him that when we both arrived in Heaven I expected him to look me up for a face to face chat. There is no doubt in my mind that it will happen.

Someone recently asked me if I feared death. My answer was that there is no reason to fear going home. And I'm pretty sure Gorges felt the same.

    1. Indeed, Vicki. I don't fear death at all. I've been "at sea" for a long time. At this point I smell the fragrance of land, and look forward to tying up at the home port...

  9. I really enjoyed reading his blog. It was funny and informative at the same time. I wish I knew where he got a lot of the old stuff he put on his blog. That was truly fascinating. Hugs to you all!!! Kara

    1. Kara...He was probably the only curmudgeon who could make me laugh on a regular basis. And his descriptions of his home state brought us there to enjoy the view. He really is missed.
