Flying South

It is a lovely day here in southeastern Minnesota.  Temps are in the high 70's.  The sun is shining.  I have windows open to let in the soft, summer breeze.

We have a large number of Canadian geese here.  They fly south usually in late September and October and return in the spring.  But today I have heard the unmistakable honking of several fairly large flocks of them, all heading south.

I wonder if they know something we don't!

  1. Wouldn't it be nice to have an early fall, a late winter and an early spring? - lol

  2. My first thought on reading this post was 'uh-oh'. I felt a chill in the air this morning when first walking the dog - enough that I went outside with a sweatshirt on. I love fall, though. Just hoping for a little more time to get more ripe tomatoes..hahaha.

Thx for the prayers and happy dance about my health. I'm cautiously optimistic. Although a friend whom I talk with every week says my voice is sounding stronger.
If this is a repeat, sorry, but I just recently have been diagnosed with sleep apnea. I've been on the cpap machine for just 5 weeks. I can tell I'm sleeping better. I go in tomorrow to meet with the sleep technician to go over my numbers. I know this isn't a full cure but I'm hoping for improvement. Yea!
Nice to hear about Oreo. Yes, learning to do her business outside should be celebrated. Take good care. SJ

    1. SJ...That 'uh-oh' was my reaction too, after the third or fourth flock of geese I heard. When they go looking for feed they fly low, but these were flying higher. We have had cooler weather lately so it almost feels like an early fall. That's my favorite time of year. Hope fall waits until your tomatoes ripen. :)

I just hate it when friends who are already dealing with medical issues are having to deal with more. Life just isn't fair sometimes. But I am glad that the treatment is working. I hope there will be another occasion for this chubby granny to attempt another happy dance!!

I am about halfway into cleaning out my chest freezer and am astounded at just how much that small freezer holds. Am up to my neck in cranberries and I found lots of sliced apples under the berries. Looks like applesauce is in my near future. I will do a post about it when I get down another layer or so. :)

    2. BW...There is so much water here - lakes, ponds, streams, etc.) that the geese are everywhere. The golf clubs hate them and every year they try to relocate them, but the geese always return to their place of birth. I kind of like them. Maybe because they annoy the rich and famous. :)

    3. Linda...As much as I love fall, I'm not quite ready for it just yet. Probably because winter comes shortly thereafter!

  4. It has been 10 degrees cooler than normal here for days.

Soft summer breeze? just hot and humid around here. If I open the window and large glop comes right in.

    1. Linda...I checked our weather forecast this morning and at 5 am it was 70 degrees with 50% humidity. I'm not sure I could handle you heat and humidity very well.

    2. Vicki,
I don't handle it very well at all. I have had chest problems but think I beat it back.

    3. Linda...I hope you are doing OK. Chest problems are miserable in the best of circumstances, but toss in heat and humidity, I expect they could be close to unbearable.

  5. I do think we will have an early fall. I have seen some tree starting to turn After all we had an early spring. Not sure how winter will turn out. But early fall is a given.

    1. I wouldn't be at all surprised, Rob. I have to say that I like these cooler days rather than the 90+ temps we usually have this time of year.

  6. Oh dear, I better watch the skies here too. The summer went way too fast. We haven't even gone camping.

    1. Kristine...I didn't realize how quickly summer had gone by until my Grands told me they were getting ready for school to start. Maybe the geese are just fooled by the cool weather here the past couple of weeks.

  7. Hmmm tell them to turn around, it's still summer!!

Canada Geese can be mean. We had to warn people about them on the river paths when I lived in Calgary and worked at a running store.

    1. Jenn...I think that's why the golf clubs hate the geese so much. Not only are they messy, but they get cranky and chase the golfers. :)

  8. told husband it would be early autumn. possibly a bad winter although sometimes early autumn is followed by mild winter.
it is august but night temps in low 60's no need for ac and good sleeping weather.
weather patterns much different from my childhood when jet stream was always the same shape just move south or north depending upon season.
geology tells us that change is the norm.
starlings have been gathering and heading south for weeks. ne ohio.

    1. deborah...I haven't noticed any other signs of fall except for the geese. Our night temps have been similar to yours and that is unusual for August.
I remember from my childhood the weather being different than now. The big thing is the lack of winter blizzards. We had some pretty powerful winter storms then.
