My Get Up and Go Got Up Went

Saturday was a lazy day.  A little reading, a little napping, some video watching on subjects that are of interest to me.  Sunday was more of the same.  I did enough work to keep from being slovenly, but that was about it.  I suppose I should feel a bit guilty for being such a lazy slug, but I don't.  I enjoyed every minute of it.

Duane had a lazy streak going today, too.  When I suggested ordering a pizza and splitting it, he was all for it.  So we did.  To do penance, he is going  to cook a couple of nights this week and I will make fried chicken for us one night.  It is more fun to cook for two than it is for one.

Duane posted this picture on Facebook a couple of days ago.

He said that piece of equipment taped to his chest was his new best friend.

I guess it isn't enough that he has had diabetes for years and that he recently had a stroke.  While in the hospital the doctors discovered that his heart isn't pumping exactly like it should.  So last Wednesday he had an appointment with a heart specialist.  They ran tests and gave him that heart monitor to wear for two weeks.  He hasn't got the test results yet and I expect they will know more when the two weeks is up.  He is taking it in stride - "one day at a time."  His sense of humor is still alive and well.  After all the snow we have had lately, he posted this meme on Facebook.

I'm not sure, but it might have something to do with the fact that his Mother and sisters are all not much over 5 feet tall.  :)

We had more snow over the weekend.  Here we got 3-4 inches, but the southern end of the state got closer to a foot of snow.  The wind has been howling.  It doesn't have much effect here in town, but I hear reports that roads, including some of the freeways going through rural areas, are closed.  The wind produced white-out conditions until they had to pull the plows off the roads.  Last I heard, the National Guard was out rescuing those who got caught in the storm.  We have had so much snow and cold this year that somebody posted a notice that all ice fishing houses needed to be pulled off the lakes this year by the 4th of July, just before the fireworks.  :)

Me...I am ordering vast amounts of fresh and frozen vegetables to make vegetable soup to can this coming weekend.  Might as well keep busy.  I hear more snow is on the way this week.

And I moved back here from a warmer climate because?

Oh yeah.  I remember.  This is where my kids and grands are.  And they are the only reason the move was worth it!

  1. Thankfully, are winds have died down, but it's still windy. We are not getting snow like you, but it's pretty cold.

    1. Kristina...The winds have died down here somewhat, too. But the cold is still with us. It was -5 degrees at 9 am today. The shorts and flip flops will have to wait a while longer, looks like. :)

  2. Dare I say some of the grass is greening up down here? Never mind, probably shouldn't..... And that I'm planting seedlings for the garden. No? Ok, never mind. Forget I said that.

I don't remember reading about your window replacement. Are you still looking 'out' at a plywood view?

Hope all goes well for Duane. Concern over a loved one's health can take a toll, Vicki. Take good care of yourself as well. Sometimes that is difficult.

Just over 5 feet? Even though you live up north, I would have to say, 'Hello down there'. (-: I am 5'9".

I always enjoy your scribbles, Vicki, and your wisdom.

    Blessings, Fern

    1. Fern...Green...That's the color of grass. And leaves. Right? My world has been so blindingly white for so long, I forgot. I guess it really hasn't been all that long. Just seems like it. :)

Yes, I still have a lovely piece of plywood where a window should be. It has been too cold - too windy - too snowy to finish the job. I won't complain, however, annoying though it is. I have a roof and heat and food and everything else needed to be reasonably comfortable. Many don't. But I am considering painting some huge, 1960's hippie-type flowers all over the plywood. :)

It doesn't matter if your kid is 54 years old - he is still your kid and you still worry. But I have reached the point where I just pray and give it over to God. I have to believe that He's got this. Duane's positive attitude helps me stay centered.

One of my daughters says in her next life she will be tall and thin and rich. She also says she has long, slender legs. They are just well hidden. :) My last visit to the doctor found me one inch shorter than the 5'3" I have been all my adult life. All we can do is play the cards we are dealt. I sure do wish the shrinkage had been in width - not height.

Good to hear from you, Fern. I am so very glad you and Frank are back among us.

  3. I stole your snow memes for FB. Tell Duane to hang in there; he didn't need the hair under that tape anyway.

    1. That's just fine, Gorges...I stole them in the first place. :)
Duane is doing OK. His sense of humor is alive and well. I'm pretty sure he will laugh when he sees your comment about the hair. Maybe not so much when they remove the tape!!

    1. SJ...Duane spent a number of years as a restaurant cook, so it is a real treat when he cooks for me. The weekend was great! Sometimes a person just needs to kick back and let the world go on by along with the snow and cold and wind. :)

  5. Sounds like the perfect weekend to me! The only thing I did was cook several meals and look out the windows at the snow coming down...sideways. Yep, we had a real doozy this time; about 10 more inches on top of the previous 3 weeks of snow. It took husband and son from 9:30 to 6:15 yesterday to get snow moved in order for feed truck to deliver feed for livestock today...IF the truck can make it. Lots of road closures in our area. One drift was approximately 12 feet high and 40 feet wide smack dab in front of a barn full of animals. It looks like a repeat of same toward the end of the week. Oh, the joy of it all!

Duane looks like he is feeling much better. I do believe the prayers are bringing about great results. You and Duane will be spending some quality time in the kitchen and enjoying the fruits of your labor. Fried chicken sounds wonderful!

    Have a great week...CW

    1. CW...I thoroughly enjoyed my lazy weekend! Sounds like you really got nailed by this last storm!! It is so much more difficult when there are animals who need to be kept warm and fed and watered. I remember slogging through snow drifts to get to the barn to care for the hogs we raised many years ago. Not fun at all. But they depend on us so we do it anyway.

I can complain about the weather, but in reality I have it pretty good. I no longer have to shovel or go out if I don't want to. I was amazed at how many had to be rescued when they got stuck in the snow along I90. We were lucky to be on the northern edge of this last storm, so it wasn't nearly as bad as it was for you. Spring. I am beginning to have doubts. :)

Duane is an excellent cook, so I am looking forward to those meals. He was talking about hamburger gravy over mashed potatoes one night and spaghetti another night. I am in charge of the fried chicken. I don't like to cook for just one, so it is nice to share. Having someone cook for me is a bonus!

    2. I had a nice reply written all ready to post. I did something it turned blue and was gone. My big fingers struck again. Just watch KARE 11 about the folks stuck on the Interstates, and on Lake Mille Lacs. I just scratch my head on ask why?? Not just stay home??

    3. People are stupid, Rob...this is February. This is Minnesota. This is not the first time for a blizzard. I could see going out if there were a life or death emergency, but no other reason could get me on the road during a storm like this last one. Stay warm. Hope you are getting dug out. I hear there is more on the way.

  6. studies say that old people often become undernourished because they are alone and just eat something that is quick instead of cooking. you are not that old and duane is good company good to have a friend to eat with

    1. deb...I have heard the same. And I find I don't usually cook a big meal just for me. But judging by my girth, I doubt malnutrition is a problem. :) Duane and I share a meal now and then because we live so close and because it is nice to cook for more than one. Mostly because I like spending time with my kids.
