Sidetracked

I tend to get sidetracked easily.  I start out to do one thing and often find myself off in another direction.  Sigh.

Last week my kitchen lights went off and stayed off.  The handyman finally fixed them Tuesday.  So I have been busy catching up on the kitchen stuff that is difficult when the lights are out.

Then I started out going through my fabric stash looking to see if I had enough of one color for the back of a quilt.  I found myself surrounded by fabric scraps and an idea for a nifty scrap quilt.  Now that I have light above my kitchen table, I can start cutting the pieces.

My grocery order was delivered today.  I postponed ordering vegetables for the soup I plan to can, but will get them in two weeks.  I hope to fill in some of the open spaces on the shelves.  I did order 4 lbs. of butter and will order 4 more next time to can.

I have been crocheting like a mad woman evenings.  I am determined to finish the last two afghans by spring.  I am getting tired of yarn and want to move on to playing with fabric.  When the afghans are finished, the sewing machine will get a good cleaning and oiling and then off to the races on quilts.   In between canning and dehydrating, that is.  The way things are going in the Swamp, I have a hunch we all had better be prepared for anything.

Can you believe that 'Green New Deal?'  Let's see.  They want to eliminate gas, oil, coal - all fossil fuels.  We all will need electric cars.  Planes will go the way of the dinosaur, which begs the question... How does one get to places across the oceans.  Even ships need fuel.  And I won't even get into the discussion about farting cows.  What is really scary is that most of the Dems who are in the running for President are buying into it.

The lunatics are running the asylum.  I'm just too old to go protest anything.  Phone calls, emails, letters and petitions are a waste of time.  Unless it involves power or more money in their bank accounts, they just don't care.  The only thing I can do is try to vote them out of office.  And gripe.  Here.  To you all.  Which is 'preaching to the choir!'

And keep prepping.

  1. Sometimes we need preached at just to remind us that we aren't facing the insanity alone.

    1. That's one reason I love the comments so much. It is frustrating to be old and feeble, knowing there is precious little I can do to stop the lunacy. But knowing I am not alone in this makes a world of difference.

    1. sbrgirl...I watch prepping videos and read prepping articles. Many stress the importance of community when things get bad. But not all of us live in situations where building a physical 'community' is possible. That's where blogs come in. When I read comments from others who are like minded, it is like having an online community - and it helps when fears or frustrations arise. I am so grateful to you all.

    1. Rev. Paul...The term 'silent majority' is beginning to make sense to me. We may not be out there, loudly spewing hate and discontent, as are so many on the left, but are quietly preparing for the fight that seems to be getting closer each day. Thank you of the reminder.

  4. there are lots more of us but almost none in elected office
they are playing music and dancing in the ballroom while the great ship, into the hull of which they have blasted holes, goes down
they are going down with it
read that aco was strangely elected and is a puppet
it is written that in the last days good shall be called evil and evil shall be called good
may not be the last days of the planet yet but certainly the last days of this empire
nothing that is this corrupt can stand
it is a termite eaten hulk from which the termites have left
vicki i have read that blogging is becoming a thing of the past i hope not it is how i know we are not alone
we are old and weak and dependent but we can pray if able we can also fast 'this kind comes not out but by prayer and fasting'.
so says our blessed Lord Jesus
God is present in His praises
singing praises while doing handwork of any kind-digging in the garden, peeling vegetables, sewing- brings God's Presence, according to the Word.
maybe we should all try praising when we think of it!

    1. deb...Your descriptions of the left are spot on. They remind me of the scripture about the difference in building your house on a foundation of sand versus on the rock. We have been mocked for clinging to our guns and our Bibles, but in the end, our willingness to defend what is good and right and our faith in God will be the deciding factors.

I have thought many times of quitting blogging because I lead such a quiet life and sometimes it is hard to find interesting things to write about, but each time I decide that it is more important to stay in touch with like minded folks. We give each other encouragement. We learn so much from others. And when we are feeling isolated in our real lives, our online community lets us know we are not alone. I, for one, will continue as long as there are those who are willing to share ideas, to comfort and pray for those in need and to support our online community. I am so very blessed to have found all of you.

  5. Are you sure we are not related?? We both have the "oh will you look at" problem. My youngest does all "What was that" time. I find its just amazing that so many of us here in our little corner of the net, all feel the same way.

    1. Rob...I sometimes think you are my brother from a different mother. Maybe that 'oh, look - a squirrel' problem comes from so much time spent in the frozen tundra of Minnesota. :)

We are so blessed to have found so many who think along the same lines we do. There are so few in our lives away from the net that do. It is a comfort to know that we can express our opinions and get positive feedback from our online community. That gives me hope.

  7. Since I don't watch tv, I had not heard of the 'new green deal'. But what you describe doesn't surprise me. Here, locally, the city of Vancouver has a vendetta against personal cars. Each year, new and more draconian laws are passed that make driving and parking more difficult within the downtown core. So, it doesn't surprise me that this agenda is part of the left's thinking and actions. Unfortunately, my vote doesn't impact there as I live in a neighboring city.
In any case - I love it/ adore it when you get on your soap box. It's good for me to read what you write and then the comments that are posted. I too love the community that you've created here of like-minded people.I have a very few acquaintances here but no dear friends. And no one in my real life who is concerned about 'prepping'. One of my neighbors is typical - she was in a panic when the power went out a few years ago and she had no food at all to eat. Seems that she was clueless when her microwave didn't work. I told her I'd share a can of soup I had 'extra' if she was hungry at dinner time. She never knocked on my door. So it goes.
I can just picture you surrounded by your fabric stash, now that sounds like fun.
As is his normal, MrDog is curled up by me as I type having his 'first morning' nap.

    1. SJ...The "green new deal" was introduced by a freshman socialist legislator from New York. She claims the world will end in 12 years if we don't "save the planet." High speed rail is to replace highways. Never mind that California just abandoned it's high speed rail system because it doesn't work and it is too expensive. There is to be free Medicare, free schooling for all. Also everyone is to receive free checks from the government every month whether they are unemployed or - get this - unwilling to work. That just scratches the surface. Guess maybe my soapbox will be up and running a little more in the future. :)

I can't say that I have any close friends here, either. But I do not consider that a bad thing. I have never felt the need for nights out 'with the girls.' Nor do I find it necessary to be in constant contact with 'friends.' I guess I have always been content to do what I do without the need that some have to be surrounded by people.

However, the folks I have met through my silly little blog have brought me great joy. I doubt that I have created a community. I have just been very lucky to have like-minded people visit me here. These I consider friends. Not Facebook type friends, but friends who comment and offer opinions and keep me motivated. And especially those who have offered good thoughts and prayers when things have not been going all that well. I am so very blessed to have found you all.

I don't suppose your neighbor learned anything from being out of food when the lights went out. The grocery stores here are filled with those just before a storm hits. I am astounded that there actually are people who still believe the government will 'take care of us.' The truth is, should a real disaster hit the US, involving the whole country, the politicians will be safely ensconced in their comfortable bunkers with enough gourmet food to feed an army. I suspect your politicians will do the same.

Oops! There is that soapbox again. :)

Give Mr. Dog a good ear scritching for me. He has the right idea of how to enjoy a weekend. Hope yours is lovely, my friend.

    2. Really doubt that neighbor learned anything but I can hope. And you can probably guess that my 'one' can is more like 3 cases and that's just prepared from the store soup. Most out of sight. I like the fact that I could hunker down in my apartment and be well fed for quite a while. My limitation is dog food - Mr Dog is only good for 2 months. LOL

Keep the soap box out, please.
      Cheers, SJ

    3. SJ...Sadly, your neighbor sounds like one of those who will wait for someone from the government to knock on her door with a chicken sandwich and a glass of milk. You and I know that will never happen. We depend on our deep pantrys and will not go hungry. I just don't get why that is so hard for some to understand.

There was a time when I ran out of food for my Yorkies. I cooked some hamburger and some rice, mixed them together with a jar of canned carrots and another of green beans. I think I might have mixed in an egg at feeding time. I realize that Mr. Dog would consume much more food than my two little ones did, but by storing extra rice, some kind of meat and vegetables, it might keep him going for a while. There are lots of recipes for homemade dog food that would work in an emergency situation.

I am afraid the way things are going here in the States, my soap box may be out more often than not. :)

    4. Funny enough, I use to cook for MrDog when I was trying to figure out his food allergies and commercial dog food made him sick. Finally found a kibble that he could eat. I'd keep more on hand but, like you, have storage issues in my apartment. I cooked for my other golden when she got sick.
It's funny about some people. They want to wait for the handout but some seem threatened by those of us who want to prepare, That mindset where some how I am a threat to them leaves me baffled.
On a related note - do you read Survival Blog? There was an interesting two posts there today and yesterday about creating your own 1800s-style dry goods store. I really enjoyed the article. You might check it out if you haven't already.

    5. SJ...I have noticed the same kind of thing with some who don't prepare. I wonder if they are irritated because we don't believe the government will jump right in to feed us when disaster strikes. Or that we think for ourselves and plan ahead and they don't want to be bothered. I don't know. What I do know is, they aren't coming to my house!!

Thanks for the reminder about Survival Blog. When I switched computers, I lost the bookmark and then sort of forgot about it. I skimmed through the articles you mentioned. There are several things there that I need to consider. I will read them more thoroughly tomorrow. I haven't the space to store the kind of hardware he talks about, but it made me realize that I need to get serious about cleaning out my clothes closet that is full of tubs and boxes of stuff - mostly useless stuff, I think. Like jeans with narrow legs. My legs will be wrapped forever, so the narrow legs are useless. Maybe I could use the material for something useful along with other items of clothing that I know I will never wear. Why do we hang onto those things. Wishful thinking, perhaps. But the space could be put to much better use.

  8. Vicki, I can just imagine your fingers flying with ease through your stash of yarn! You have set your goals and are sticking with your plan! I will look forward to seeing the finished projects.

Secondly, you most likely will never know how much your readers appreciate having a place to share their thoughts and frustrations. I truly look forward to each and every post! No matter the topic, I enjoy reading about your activities, responses to events, and most especially the "rants" as I always agree! I also love reading the responses. I would love to invite the little family of your readers into my home. They seem to be honest, caring, and common sensed.

As you know, Frank and Fern are back providing great posts and reposts that are very thought provoking. I'm so glad that they returned, AND I am so happy you continue as well.

Take care and keep on preparing...CW

    1. Cw...You say the nicest things! And wouldn't a get-together be fun!!

I so enjoy the comments from you all. It is nice to know what others are thinking and all of you give me motivation to continue with this silly little blog. If things don't straighten out in the Swamp soon, and I just don't see that happening, I am afraid you may see more of my soap box. Did you see where Nancy Pelosi says now that President Trump declared an emergency on the border crisis, a Democratic president will declare an emergency on guns. She, who lives behind a wall and has armed bodyguards. She should try living in my neighborhood unarmed and alone.

I am so glad Frank and Fern are back. They keep me on my toes and have such good, useful information.

You take good care, yourself. And the preparing will continue. The way things are going, I fear we will need it sooner than later.

  9. Vicki,
Don't feel like the Lone Ranger. There are a lot of folks out there that feel like you do, and I'm certainly one of them.

I don't understand how people who are such idiots can be elected, and I don't see how people can be so idiotic as to vote for them. The only explanation I can come up with is that their supporters voted for them based solely on race and religion. That isn't supposed to be how it works, but I think it's come to that in a lot of cases. It doesn't help that a lot of the people who vote for these freaks are not citizens and shouldn't be voting at all.

    1. Harry...I guess I just get frustrated at times. Partly because I am just too old and too tired to fight the system any more. And partly because even if I could still fight, it wouldn't make a bit of difference. I just don't understand how people who are supposed to be grown-ups can buy into the pile of crap the Dems are selling. Killing babies is something to be celebrated. Leave the border open and welcome them all in. Perhaps the politicians on the left should take a stroll through the Little Mogadishu community in Minneapolis, without their armed body guards, and see how far they get. Or walk through the woods or town near you, where drug dealers ply their trade.

I have pretty much decided that whatever fight I have left in me will go toward protecting my family. My son next door, my youngest son and I all have the means to stop intruders. I am little by little and as often as I can, filling in the spaces in my preps. And even though it ticks me off most of the time, I am keeping an eye on the news and what is going on around us. I don't know what else to do, but I do know my family will be taken care of as much as I am able to take care of them.

We who still have some common sense are all in this together.

    2. Vicki, I feel about the same. For forty years I tried to be active in the political system, tried to participate, and in the end it didn't change a thing.

All I can really do now, is react to developments, grim though they may be. I watch the news because I can't plan in an information vacuum. Sometimes I get so furious I tell myself I'll just stop , but the outside world keeps on churning and the ostrich with the head in the sand approach just doesn't work.

I guess we will just do the best we can.
