I'm Still Here...

I haven't fallen off the edge of the earth just yet.  I have just been busy.

I have had some time between canning sessions so I decided I needed to do some organizing.  I am not good being organized.  But a friend of mine was telling me about re-organizing her living quarters and that kind of lit a fire under me to get busy and do the same.  (It is all your fault - you know who you are.  :) )

I worked on the organizing project over the weekend and today, getting mostly everything I wanted to done.  A couple of hours tomorrow should finish it up except for the 'closet of terror.'  That's the closet where everything I don't know what to do with gets stuffed.  I'm kind of afraid to open the door.  I think something growled at me the last time I did.

My regular grocery order will be delivered Thursday.  I have food coming for both canning and for dehydrating.  Sometimes it is awfully tempting to just say, "Heck with it.  I have enough."  Thing is, I don't think I will ever have enough.  I don't know what is coming.  I just know it is not good.

My morning routine is to drink a couple of cups of coffee while checking out my favorite blogs and the news of the day.  I think for a little while I may skip the news.  It just gets more stupid by the day.  I know I need to keep an eye on what is happening in the world around me, but sometimes I just need a break from the insanity.

So this evening it is just me, some hand sewing on a quilt top and a movie.  With maybe a piece of the wonderful fudge Duane brought me from the State Fair yesterday.   I had never tasted cherry chocolate fudge before, but I really hope to again.  (That's a hint, Son!)

  1. I tried to organize my place a few times, but it always ended up worse and things disappeared! - lol

    1. Gorges...Funny. But how about this...Somewhere in my apartment are six birthday cards for the grands. I put them away for safekeeping and haven't seen them since. That was several years ago. :)

  2. Vicki, you are one very ambitious and brave woman to tackle reorganizing your nest. Hope nothing jumps out of "the closet". I always get the urge to fluff up my nest in the autumn. Winter is just around the corner so plenty of food stored and a tidy, cozy place to winter sounds perfect. I am away from home for a few days, but will return to begin my nesting soon. Good idea to continue preparing...take care and be aware, CW

    1. I'm not so sure about ambitious or brave, CW...Sometimes stuff just needs doing. It was past time and I really needed to do something to try to find more storage space. I'm doing alright on the stored food, but there are other things I need to stock up on before winter sets in. Have you seen the Farmer's Almanac predictions for us? Not looking good.

The closet scares me. I don't worry about mice or bugs for I have never seen evidence of either in all the years I have lived here, but it is the stuff I have jammed in there that is worrisome. :) I suppose I will get it done, but likely not until winter. I can put it off until then, I think. :)

  3. I can not organize with hubby here. Boys have helped, in both the last house and this, and things just end up worse; as Georges said.

    God bless!
I manage to keep THE most important things more or less organized and I thank God for that.

What you have put up will be a blessing. I wish I could do the same. But I do praise God for what we have.

I think with the right blogs/websites to keep you informed, you probably don't need the news. Because people definitely seem to be getting more stupid.

What do you use for your dehydrating? I would like to do more dehydrating; but should have got one with a real door on it. And in an uninsulated house, not sure but what I might be wasting electricity with it.
We do make our own jerky (which doesn't really last long enough to be stored); but we use our propane oven to dry it.

    God bless!

    1. LindaG...I think it is much easier for me to organize because it is just me here. When my husband was alive, it was harder to keep thing tidy. Bless his heart, he was one who wanted to keep everything because "it might come in handy someday." That doesn't work well in a small apartment. Of course, I wasn't into prepping back then, but still it seemed like there was always an abundance of stuff. Sometimes all a person can do is keep track of the important stuff and let the rest just take care of itself.

Not everyone goes nuts like I do with food preservation, and I surely could not do it without considerable help from my adult kids. I hate to think about how much food and canning jars they have hauled up the stairs to my apartment for me. I might do the actual canning and dehydrating, but that couldn't happen without considerable help.

I have two dehydrators and both are the Nesco brand. They run between $50 and $60 each. It is not within my budget to buy the more expensive box style ones. I had two dehydrators years ago that had the fan and motor in the bottom, but I ruined both when food dropped down into the motor. The ones I have now have the motor and fan in the lid. I have to rotate the trays about halfway through the drying process, but other than that, they do a good job for me. The old ones didn't have any heat control either, but the ones I have now do. I wouldn't think electricity would be wasted as all the heat and air are directed right onto the food. Just a guess on my part.

God bless you, too, Linda. It doesn't matter what method you use to build up food storage. As long a you are trying, even if it is a few extra cans of fruit or vegetables now and then or a bag of rice once in a while, you are miles ahead of those who can't be bothered or who refuse to see why we need to prepare. Take care.

  4. Glad your ok. My stomach revolted the last 24 it was ugly. Feeling better. I'm with you the news is just NUTZ. I can read a headline and tell that its liberal press or not. Once again we passed on the fair. Still too soon after Disney World crowds

    1. Rob...I'm fine. Just got busy and wasn't on the computer much and I really couldn't find any words of wisdom to blog about. :)
Those stomach things can be nasty. Glad you are better. Being sick is just no fun at all.
I guess my tolerance for BS is pretty low. I am just so tired of the craziness. And the lies. I expect I will go back to checking out headlines soon, but a break from it is necessary.
Duane goes to the fair every year. He enjoys it, especially the food. Me...I don't do well in crowds of people. He usually brings me a treat, and that is enough of the fair for me. :)

  6. I have two "closet(s) of terror," Vicki. One of them is called "Garage." The other one is called "Barn."

Vicki, where the HECK do you get the energy???

We can never be too prepared...

    1. Oh Lordy, Pete...I have all I can do to contend with one lousy closet. I'm not sure I could deal with a garage and barn of terror. :)

About this energy thing. A number of years ago I was out of a job. I needed to earn some quick money, so I cleaned the apartment of an older lady for a while. She was a nice lady, not limited in any way physically or mentally. But she chose to spend her days in an easy chair in front of her TV, a TV tray set up at her elbow that held her coffee cup, snacks, etc. I never saw her do anything else. She had no interests except for her TV. The memory of that woman sitting there in her robe and slippers, engrossed in her TV, day after day, is one thing that keeps me going. I do not ever want to become that lady.

It would be so easy to stop with the prepping sometimes, but I just can't. I use what I store, so there are always items to be replaced. And when whatever it is happens, who knows how long the bad times will last. I want my family to outlast it as long as possible. Or at least long enough to make good decisions about what to do next.
