Social Security Scam

Yesterday my phone rang.  Often I let calls go to voice mail, but as I was expecting a call, I answered.  The voice on the other end informed me that he was from the Social Security Administration.  He further stated that there was a criminal complaint against my Social Security number.

Now in all the years I have been dealing with the Social Security Administration, never even once have they called me.  If I wish to speak to them, I am the one who initiates the call.  If they wish to get in touch with me, they do so via the US Mail.

So I told the gentleman that in all fairness and full disclosure, I was informing him that the call was being recorded and would he please clearly state his name, his title and the phone number at which my attorney could reach him to discuss the matter.

He hung up.  I don't know why.  :)

We are old.  We didn't get to be old by being stupid.

    1. Thanks, One Family...I expect your Mom isn't nearly as ornery as I am. :)

  2. Sadly, they're trying to prey on people who are getting less sharp of mind as they age. About the only people lower than them are child molesters.

    1. Sad but true, Gorges...There has to be a special place in hell for those who prey on the vulnerable.

Funny; I never seem to get to that last word before they hang up...

    3. Pete...Amazing how quickly they can cut off the call! Any day I can get them to hang up on me I consider a successful day. :)

  4. My sweetheart keeps getting those calls. The first time he nearly had a heart attack. I looked them up, it is definitely a scam -- SS does not call people and does not suspend accounts.

    1. sbrgirl...I have received calls like this before. They want you to reveal your SS number which gives them access to your information which they can use to scam money. Or they want to scare you into thinking you owe money. Ruthless bunch of crooks they are.

  5. They are looking for the mis-informed seniors. I get these robo calls saying they are such n such from the gifting dept, or what ever they are peddling. But they do say they are calling on a recorded line. Can you hear me ok??? DON"T CALL AGAIN i tell them. Its all the same area code as me 320, and the exchange is always 200-XXXX or 208-XXXX. My cell says SCAM LIKELY..I have as my ring tone for these numbers is "Who can it be now." I have ring tones pre programed for all my calls, family and friends. all are different so I know who is calling

    1. Rob...I am probably the only person in the civilized world who doesn't own a cell phone. I have a house phone with caller ID. The sneaky sons of guns change both the name and number that shows up on caller ID. This week I got calls that showed up as both Shakopee Schools and Canterbury Park. Both were from the same outfit wanting me to consolidate my credit cards. I do not have a credit card. This is why I usually let Voice Mail take calls unless I know who it is. Then I can just delete the message unless I am feeling ornery and want to mess with them some. :)

  6. I got a call claiming to be my grandson and asking for money as he was in New York with a broken car. Oh wow I said. Are you Jeff or tommy? He said he was Jeff. I have no grandson named Jeff (or Tommy either) and after I fooled with him a bit more he hung up on me.

    1. Anon...I suppose there are people who would rush right out and wire money to the 'grandson,' but it seems to me it would be easier for them to just go get a real job. Every once in a while I get a call from our local fire department begging for donations. But the local firefighters I know personally tell me they never, ever solicit funds via phone calls. These scammers aren't nearly as clever as they think they are.
