Many Thanks...

to all of you for your words of encouragement and your prayers. This quitting smoking thing is no fun – no fun at all. I am still somewhat cranky. And I still want a cigarette. But I am smoke free and have every intention of staying that way. Sometimes stubborn can work for us. :)

My groceries were delivered today. There was a sale on turkeys and hams, with a limit of two on each, so that's what I ordered. The hams were about 7.5 lbs. each and they fit nicely into my freezer.

The turkeys, however, topped out at 17 lbs. and 20 lbs. They would not fit in the freezer – no way, no how!

Note to self: Check to see how much freezer space you have before ordering meat for the freezer. Duh!

Guess who will be cooking and canning turkey tomorrow. :)

Not complaining. Not at all. I am just happy to have that much more meat to add to my food storage. And to be able to get it while it is still affordable.

Here in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota, we have had a couple of light snowfalls. But by mid afternoon, what fell the night before has melted off. That's fine with me. Although it is not unusual to have a considerable amount of snow on the ground by Thanksgiving, I won't mind if that doesn't happen this year.

That's all I know for now. I suppose I could work up a rant about several things going on just now, but I think I would rather stay relatively happy.

Sometimes, the best revenge on those who would try to make our lives miserable is to be happy anyway. Drives them crazy. :)

  1. Great news! Keep at it - it will get easier and no, it doesn't happen over night. It was weird for me as I always thought I wanted a cigarette and then, all of a sudden, one day, I realized I didn't care anymore about smoking. In fact it got to the point that the thought of smoking almost made me feel sick, especially when I smelled a bunch of other people smoking in an enclosed area. Damn near barfed. You are doing great. 1. Rae...Thanks for the encouragement. It took many years to get to this point and I know things will not change overnight, as much as I wish they would! Nice to see another resident of the Great White North!!

  3. So much for taking a break from canning...And what a blessing to get more meat put up.
No snow here, yet. More rain coming later this weekend. My immediate area is not effected by the recent flooding which is a blessing.
Still cheering you on. I know it's a tough one to quit addictions of all kinds.

    1. Thanks for the cheering! So far - so good. I am glad to hear the flooding is not in your area Must be awful for those affected. I took the lazy way out and froze the turkey meat. When packaged in quart size bags, it was easy to stuff it into small spaces. :) Canning supplies are so scarce that I think I will hold onto what I have for emergencies. Take care.

  4. Vicki~ Good for you sticking to giving up ciggies, your health improving and the $$$ savings adding up. I scored regular and wide mouth lids at the market today, along with buy one get one Hersey and Dove chocolate candy for Christmas, more veggies and celery for the dehydrator, and some Food Saver Rolls boxes at 50% off. I still need to pick up a turkey.

    1. Thanks, Red...It gets better every day. Good for you on finding lids. There has been zero canning supplies here for at least a month. I'm dehydrating shredded hash browns just now with more onions to do next. Keep stacking. :)

  5. Good to hear you are sticking with no smoking. My husband craved a cig for some years after he quit. His mom and I held him accountable tho and he stuck with it. His boss smoked 2 packs a day and even with that he didn't go back.

    1. Thanks, Ann...Being stubborn helps, I think. :) And good on your husband for sticking with it. I am finding this is an addiction that is not easy to get rid of.

  6. Vickie, as an es-smoker for years now I will tell you my secret to successfully quitting. Realize it is a mind game. You must win the mind game which is just as important as ending the physical addiction. You must tell yourself you are DONE with smoking. Its over. It's gone. It is behind you now. Forever. It is out of your life now and forever.

Hope this helps. Stick with it! Your body can heal rather quickly (surprisingly) from the years of smoking damage. Best of luck!!!

    Regards, Mama J

    1. MamaJ...I had only thought in terms of the physical addiction, but you are absolutely right. So thank you for pointing out to me that I need to win that mind game as well. Whatever it takes. I want no part of smoking ever again!

  8. I used to smoke, years ago.
    My clothes smelled funny.
I was always centered on smoking.
    Then I quit.
But I'm glad I never tried that tobacco.
I hear that stuff is addicting.

  9. Vicki,

Both my parents smoked and I grew up hating the smell of smoking from my earliest memories.

No I cannot state with 100% surety that smoking put my Dad into an early grave, but his Congestive heart failure says that smoking was a large part of it.

Both of my parents quit smoking in the late sixties and I'm sure that helped their health.

Congratulations to you, and of all the things we can do to help ourselves, quitting smoking is a really large positive.

Yep, I do have deep and intense feelings on the subject.

Again, well done, and continue to help yourself.

I forgot to mention the very real economic benefit to not smoking.

    1. Thank you, John, for your encouraging words. I am aware that some of my health issues are self-inflicted and smoking related. I can't change the past, but I can do better in the future. The response from all of you has helped me more than you can know. All of you are right at the top of my list of things to be thankful for!
