Yesterday

I was pottering about in the kitchen this evening when Son joins me and says, "You aren't gonna believe this."

He had been listening to the police scanner for a county north of us.  Some fool of a woman had called the police.  The reason?  Two kids were playing outside.  She could hear their voices.  One of the kids said, "Don't push me."  The other said, "Ouch."

That was it.  Don't push me and ouch.  Really?  That warranted a call to the police?  Amazing.  I remember times when, if I hadn't known better, I would have sworn that my kids were all murdering one another.  Of course, there were the threats of mayhem if they didn't Stop.  That.  Fighting.  Right.  Now.

That got Son and I to talking about things that happened when he and his siblings were kids.  Like the time when he was about 12 years old and was trail riding his mini motorcycle with his Dad, who was on a full size dirt bike.  The front tire blew.  Son went off into the brush.  Got banged up a bit.

Then:  He climbed out of the brush, dusted himself off and wheeled his bike back to the cabin.  Washed off the scratches, applied a couple of bandaids and went back out to play.

Now:  If there were witnesses to the accident, the police and Social Services would be called.  Along with an ambulance.  Charges for child endangerment would be filed.  In the coming months lawyers, judges and a lot of money would be involved.  Son would be hospitalized for observation.  And both bikes would likely be hauled off to the impound lot, never to be seen again.

And there are those who wonder why we long for yesterday.

  1. People are just stupid as a general rule anymore.

With any luck i still have 35 to 40 years left, but in some ways I hate to see how bad things are going to get.

  2. Matt...It is unfortunate that there is no cure for stupid. Both my son and I like listening to the scanner in the evenings. Partly for the entertainment value, for there surely is a whole bucket load of stupid out there, and partly to keep track of what is going on in the city. I am completely amazed at the little things people call the police to handle. Unruly children. Barking dog. Etc., etc., etc.
I, too, hate to think of what is coming. But coming it is and that's why I continue to prepare, in spite of those who think I'm nuts.

  3. It has gotten way out of control!People putting their noses where they don't belong. Everybody has an opinion....now they let everybody know it! Sickening!

  4. Mary...I am absolutely floored by the petty little things people call the police for. Things that any responsible adult would just handle themselves. But it seems that so many want someone else to take care of these small problems. Either they don't want to be bothered or they are so used to having their needs filled by government, they probably no longer know how to act like responsible adults. Sad, really.

  5. Just another example of the softening of America, and not at the waistline sunshine.

  6. Rob...By listening to the scanner I am finding there is a whole segment of the population that really does expect law enforcement to deal with all problems, large and small. Not too long ago there was a call from someone complaining that their neighbor's cat was in their yard chasing birds. They expected the police to come and remove the cat. What? They couldn't go outside, pick up the cat and toss it back over the fence? Sheesh!

These are the same people who will starve to death, waiting for the government to take care of them when the SHTF. I find it tough to have any sympathy for those who refuse to take care of themselves and their families, but expect others to do it for them.

  7. I was listening to local radio here recently, and they told about some moron in Oregon who went to a flea market, saw some vendor selling Confederate memorabilia, and called 911 about it.

The world is full of people too stupid to live. And they only continue to do so because it is illegal to kill them.

  8. Harry...I also read about that fool in Oregon. What is really scary is that these people reproduce.
