It has been quiet here...

in my little corner of the world.

I guess the nut jobs were congregated in Charlottesville, busy with beating each other to a pulp and doing their best to run over as many as possible with a car.  Didn't seem to slow Chicago down much, what with 5 dead and 22 injured in shootings over the weekend.

But in my world, laundry was caught up, floors were mopped and scalloped potatoes and ham were consumed.

The politicians are trying every way possible to blame each other for the grievance of the day.  I don't pay attention to them any more.  World leaders are rattling sabers and making not so veiled threats to one another.

But in my world, brownies were baked and grandchildren were properly hugged and the words, "I love you, Grandma" were heard.

The headlines still scream gloom and doom.  Nearly every crime and perversion is touted in bold type.  And nothing changes.

But in my world, raspberry pancakes from a mix given me by my grands (along with a jug of real maple syrup) made a memorable breakfast this morning.

Often I find myself wishing I had exciting things to write about like so many other bloggers do.  And then I take a look at the world around me and quickly decide that I am perfectly content with my life here at my little apartment.  Nobody tries to shoot me.  Nobody tries to run over me.  I get to see my youngest son and his family when they stop in after a day at the local arboretum.  I get to spend time with my oldest son at least twice a week.  My daughters are close by as are the rest of my grands.

I get to do what I want when I want, which usually includes a damn good cup of coffee and a mystery book.  Or time spent doing things that make me happy like sewing or crocheting.  Or canning and dehydrating.

I will take this less than exciting life any day of the week.  :)

  1. I don't read blogs for excitement! You are just the right amount of excitement for me! Those crazies out there worry me, so I need a little less crazy, just like you are. I will take your lack of excitement any day rather than reading about another baby shot in the head.

  2. Linda...The more I read about the insanity around me, the more I am liking my dull little life! I realize the need to be informed about what is happening in our world, but I don't have to live it - at least not yet. When my brother was here, he remarked that I seemed to be happy. I told him that I was content, and I think is a good place to be.

  3. Despite following the other world fairly closely, Vicki, I much prefer yours!

    1. Me, too, Gorges. I just don't do 'bat guano crazy' very well. And it seems like that is what the world has come to, doesn't it.

  4. I wish there was more of 'your corner of the world' I think that would solve a lot.

    1. Jenn...There used to be much more of my world years ago. I know there are still lots of good people out there, but it just seems like the hate and insanity is gaining ground. I can't fix it so I just have to concentrate on what is important - friends and most of all, family. :)

  5. Give me contentment any day. BTW, how's that grand-puppy of yours doing? You haven't mentioned him/her in a while.
I did some canning today!! My micro-farming produced enough cucumbers to yield 3 pints of bread and butter pickles. I'm just tickled - first that I had enough cucumbers to put up. And, that my health just might be improving. I'm also enjoying cucumbers for lunch and dinners. The cherry tomatoes are coming in as well as a second micro-crop of strawberries. The down side -my big old butternut squash plant has yielded exactly one squash. Oh, well.
    Cheers, SJ

    1. SJ...Sometimes it takes years to reach the stage where contentment is possible, but it is wonderful when it finally happens.
The grand-puppy is doing really well. She came through the spaying ordeal with flying colors and has figured out that her pottie is located outside. The kids and their parents adore her. They showed me pictures of her and if her body ever catches up to the length of her legs, she is going to be one big dog!
Good for you on the pickles!! Bread and butters are my favorite. Sometimes it seem like you will never have enough of a harvest to do anything with and then you have more than you know what to do with! Cherry tomatoes are a personal favorite. I eat them like candy. :)
Your one butternut squash still trumps my one string bean. lol
If I had the physical capability, my dear, I would be doing a happy dance right in the middle of the street outside my apartment to celebrate the news of your improving health! Prayers for continuing improvement are being sent heavenward and good thoughts are being sent in your direction. That is just the best possible news.

  6. I spent the weekend canning like crazy! Our apple tree is so loaded right now. Trying not to let any go to waste.

    1. Good for you, Lisa...Your family will so enjoy all of that apple goodness throughout the year. It is a lot of work but well worth it.

Reminded me of a time when my family had a very small apple orchard. Mother put me to making pies that were frozen before baking. When she wanted an apple pie, she just took one from the stack in the freezer and baked it. Good memories.

  7. You are lucky to have it quite in the middle of the city. Life is good.

    1. Rob...Years ago when the 169 bypass went in, most of the heavy traffic used that rather than going through town. Many of the business moved out there as well, leaving mostly the neighborhood bars (they are pretty tame) and just a few stores. Aside from the trains that run past the end of my block, ( only a couple of trains
daily) it stays much more quiet than many city streets would be. I am lucky!

  8. Vicki, I agree. I don't have an exciting life, but I get to stay home and harvest some green beans (with help), and I finally got back to crochet-work last night. I can continue to teach my kids to cook, and hopefully some day they'll get it all. I'm not quite back to cooking and baking, but hopefully very soon.

    1. Kristina...I am so very glad you are getting better. Staying home - harvesting green beans - crocheting - teaching your children - all may not be exciting. But there is nothing more important. I firmly believe we need to get back, at least partially, to the non-exciting lives of our grandparents. They knew how to live. I read just the other day an article that said many of today's young don't even know how to sew on a button. They are too busy being Social Justice Warriors to learn how to take care of themselves. They are doomed. We will survive. :)
