here in my little corner of the world. The biggest excitement here was my grocery order delivery. And that was pretty dull as I just ordered necessaries and no fun stuff. I don't know what I was thinking. I usually order one treat like Little Debbie Nutty Bars or maybe a small bag of butterscotch candies. Guess I can suffer through with the cookies I made a couple of days ago. :)
Our cool weather went away and has been replaced with heat. It is nearly 6 pm and the temp is 91 degrees. The humidity is up there as well and we have an air quality alert from smoke blowing in from wildfires. But it looks like a cool down is coming by Sunday.
I'm pretty much having to confine myself to reading just the headlines. My blood pressure can't handle the details. For a time it seemed like common sense and goodwill had returned, what with the efforts of citizens helping citizens. It did my heart good to see all those folks showing up with their boats to rescue those stranded in the flood waters. Race, diversity and white privilege be damned. People just helped people. But now that the storms have passed, it seems we are right back where we were before.
I saw where a bunch of bottom feeders were busy helping themselves to high dollar shoes in the wake of the Florida hurricane. I was glad to see that a couple dozen of them had been arrested. Oddly enough, no work boots were stolen.
Black Lives Matter found it necessary to cover the statue of Thomas Jefferson at the University of Virginia in a black shroud.
Berkeley is ramping up to deal with the violence when a (gasp) conservative speaker shows up. In typical response, the administration is offering counseling to those who can't handle opposing opinions.
And just this afternoon there are reports that the lunatic in North Korea has launched another missile.
I know I need to keep track of what is going on around us. But for this evening, I believe a glass of lemonade, a cookie or two and a good mystery book are in order. Perhaps my sanity can be saved after all.

Years ago, and experiment was done in somewhere in Africa. The blood pressure of everyone in the village was tested for a few months and an average figured. THEN, ONE transistor radio was given to the chief of the tribe. Naturally, the people of the village were invited by him to hear what was going on in the rest of the world. After 30 days, the whole villages blood pressure was taken again and averaged. It was 10 points higher than the month before. I guess ignorance really IS bliss.
ReplyDeleteI don't doubt your story at all, Gorges. It isn't that I am afraid of the news stories. It is all the stupid stuff that gets to me. Like covering the statue of Jefferson - you have to wonder if those people are smart enough to tie their own shoes in the morning. :)
Deletethat's why they have those velcro sneakers
ReplyDeleteThat's funny, deb...and sadly, very true.
Delete"oddly enough, no work boots were stolen." LOL, funniest thing I have read lately.
ReplyDeleteI am not a thief, but if I were in Harvey, I think work boots would be my choice to purloin.
Linda...I wish I could take credit for that line, but I can't. I saw it somewhere and thought how true it was!
DeleteI had to giggle about your sanity saver - books and comfort food. Yes, that is perfect.
ReplyDeleteKristina...Books and comfort food have always been my way to cope when the insanity becomes over the top. Seems to be working so far. :)
DeleteLike Mr. Rogers said, always look for the helpers, you will always find people who are helping. I think he meant helping others, not helping themselves to shoes.
ReplyDeleteJenn...You are right. You and I were raised knowing exactly what is right and what is wrong. My Midwest Bible Belt upbringing would never allow me to take what belongs to someone else. I hope each and every one of those low-life looters get blisters on their feet from their stolen shoes.
DeleteAnd it was interesting to me how the main stream media really did not cover much/any of the looting.
ReplyDeleteYour cookies and books sound like a good plan.
Took the dog for his 3-month checkup yesterday. The vet was very happy with what she saw. Yea! I'm just enjoying him each day that I have him.
Went to one garden today and started to tidy it up for winter. We're supposed to get our 'first fall' storm on Sunday. Will see if that forecast holds. I any case, I trimmed down my asparagus fronds and put away their supports. Still harvesting cherry tomatoes.
I'll take 'not exciting' any day of the week. I like my little corner of the world as well.
Cheers,
SJ
SJ...Our 'little corners of the world' are the best places to be in these crazy, upside down times. It is looking more and more like I will be staying right here. Affordable housing is pretty much nonexistent. There is government subsidised housing on the other side of town, but those apartment complexes are full of drug dealers, refugees and garden variety low-life types. Not somewhere I would be comfortable living. I will just have to figure out a way to navigate stairs. Better than living in fear.
DeleteI am not at all surprised that main stream media did not cover the looting. Fox News (I watch it on my computer) had several stories about it. I don't know about Canada, but here in the States we really need a moral revival.
Cookies and books worked well. They will likely work well over the weekend, too. :)
Glad the vet visit was a good one. Dogs are such good companions. They love you no matter what.
With temps in the high 80's, it seems like fall is a long way off, when it actually is right around the corner. We will get a cool-down over the weekend. I am really looking forward to fall weather. Even though I am indoors, the humidity makes for some interesting twinges in the joints. I envy your cherry tomatoes. They are my favorites. I eat them like candy!
Hi again,
ReplyDeleteWith our weather, I don't try and grow anything bigger then a cherry tomatoe. I want some hope of success!!
I am truly blessed where I live. It's an apartment complext but 8 of the 49 units are geared to the rent being no more then 40% of your income. That's still high but do-able. Unfortunately the Federal program that provides that is going to run out for my building in 2019 if not renewed. I'm praying it will be renewed. And if not, I'm praying God will direct me some where else.
My test of the neighborhood was whether I'd be comfortable walking it either with or without the dog. This neighborhood passed that test with flying colors.
Guess that's it for now...
SJ
SJ...Cherry tomatoes seem to be a good choice. I am hearing that this year the regular sized tomatoes just aren't ripening well. My windowsill tomatoes died out but I have one plant left that I haven't as yet killed off. That is green bell peppers. There are about six plants in the pot and as of this morning there are seven open blossoms and more coming on. And the plants are still green and beautiful. If I can keep them alive, I may just be able to harvest a couple of peppers. Woo Hoo!!!
DeleteThe apartments on the other side of town have become havens for drugs and all sorts of crime. I listen to the police scanner and a good share of the calls are for those addresses. I wouldn't want to walk in that area, day or night. I feel much more safe right where I am, even with the bars located nearby. Even though it is a downtown area, I have never been afraid to walk this neighborhood. The way you feel about trusting God to direct you elsewhere if need be is the way I feel about moving. Sometimes I think if I was supposed to move, we wouldn't be having such a hard time finding the right place.
Things really have gotten grim, haven't they? My son and daughter came home from work the other day, and couldn't get into their apartment because there had been a gang shoot out in front of the building and the cops wouldn't let anyone in until they hauled off the dead. Three years ago that was an upscale, middle class apartment complex. Now it's full of "subsidized housing" welfare families and Moslem "refugees." The kids were transferring down to Florida until these damned storms, now the manager of the office they were going to says they will have to wait until March or April to move.
ReplyDeleteIt was cool here during the hurricane, but now the heat is coming back, as it is there. I knew it had too, it's not late enough in the year for true Fall weather. Soon though, it'll be flannel shirt weather.
Glad you are doing ok.
Harry...Every day things seem to get even more grim. Which ever way you turn, there is some new insanity. I really hope your kids can move out of that area sooner than spring. We have similar subsidized apartment complexes here, on the other side of town. The rent is cheaper than what I pay now, but there is no way I would live there. Every bottom feeder gravitates to those apartments and most of the crime in the area is linked to them. It looks like I will wind up staying where I am. I would rather figure out a way to navigate the stairs than deal with the low life types in those apartments.
DeleteI am glad you and your wife made it through the storm with minimal damage. I can't imagine what it must be like to go through that kind of storm. We have an occasional tornado or a straight line wind storm that peels shingles off roofs or blows patio furniture into the next block, but that is nothing compared to the end of a hurricane in your area. The longest time I have been without power was 24 hours and that was when some drunk ran his car into a telephone pole and knocked the pole down. Winter blizzards are our nemesis. We haven't had a bad one for quite some time. I suppose we are due for one.
I know you are not big on religious stuff, but I will continue to pray for the safety of your kids. From what you have said it sounds like you have trained them well to take care of themselves. Still - a little prayer can't hurt. :)
