Update

Duane's siblings have been with him at the hospital.  When the chips are down, they rally around.  Always have.

My youngest daughter called to tell me the tests show that Duane suffered a minor stroke yesterday afternoon.  Being stubborn like his mother, he waited until early this evening to do anything about it.  He will remain in the hospital for now and have more tests and therapy tomorrow.

I am humbled by the outpouring of concern and prayers from all of you.  There are still good people in this world and you are at the top of the list.  My heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you.

    1. Thank you Carol...We will know more tomorrow after more tests, etc. He is one tough cookie and I expect he will work at recovering as much as possible. Prayers and positive thoughts are very welcome, as are hugs!!

  2. Obviously, a stroke is serious, Vicki, but there must not have been as much damage as one would expect or he would have been having even more trouble. I'll continue praying, plus I enlisted a little help.

    1. Gorge...I am told it was a minor stroke. There was no slurred speech and he walked down the steps and to the ambulance on his own with paramedics alongside him to catch him if he fell. He called me earlier and sounded positive.
I saw that you had called out the troops and I am truly grateful. Prayer is powerful.

  3. Vicki, I'm not a regular reader, but am offering prayers for your son. My son had a stroke about a year and a half ago. He has limited use of his left side, but is optimistic about his recovery. I have learned that more and more young people are having strokes. He has a podcast, strokecast.com, which may be helpful to you and your family. I hope your son makes a complete recovery.

    1. Cathy...Prayers are truly appreciated. Duane is no longer a young man at age 54, but not an old man either. We don't know what the prognosis is as yet but are remaining positive. Thank you for the link to your son's podcast. I have bookmarked it as I am sure it will be helpful in the days ahead. Your son is included in my prayers.

  5. Just now seeing this since I thought you'd be away from your blog. As a dear friend says ---I've put you and yours at the top of my prayer list.
And that our Lord will wrap you in His arms.

    1. Thank you, my friend. We need all the help and prayers we can get just now. I was away from the computer working on the afghan until this happened but just now I can't seem to concentrate on anything. I know God has got this, but it is hard not knowing where it will all end up. Give MrDog a good hard petting from his biggest fan. :)

    1. Thank you, deb...We are trying to stay positive. He is in the place he needs to be and I'm sure the doctors will get him set up with what he needs before they let him come home.

There is a drug called Tissue plasminogen activator (abbreviated tPA). It is used to break up clots from a stroke or heart attack. I do know that if it administered the patient can not get life insurance afterwards. Existing policies are ok, but not new ones.Hopefully Duane will not need this done. Here is to a full recovery and many long healthy years ahead.

    1. Red...I was able to talk with him earlier this evening. He said he was getting injections every 8 hours to prevent blood clots, as a clot caused his stroke. I can't remember what the drug is but the one you mention doesn't sound familiar. Thanks for the information and the kind words. I hope to enjoy many more years of his company.

  11. I've been away from home and computer for several weeks so was out of the loop concerning your son. Vicki, I would be frightened as well if I was in your situation, but when things turn dark the only answer is prayer. You have many who care about you and your family, and we know God answers our prayers. Duane is in good hands...prayers sent for you, your family and Duane's recovery.CW

    1. Thank you, CW...I am blessed to have so many who are offering my son up in prayer. The scary part is over. We know what the problem is. Now we deal with it. I guess I shouldn't say 'we,' for it is Duane who will be putting in the hard work to recover. The rest of us are his cheering section.
