Wednesday Ramble

There are workmen on the roof of my building.  I heard scraping sounds earlier in the week.  Yesterday there was a crash that rattled the dishes in the cupboard.  Thought for sure I would find an elephant had come through the ceiling and was sitting in the middle of my kitchen table.  Today more resounding crashes have occurred.   I don't know what they are doing up there.  I am sort of afraid to ask.

I have decided that if God had wanted me to be able to bend down and touch my toes, He would have put them on my knees.

Take several small pieces of venison steak.  Sprinkle with the contents of a package of onion soup mix.  Add just a splash of water.  Let the steak simmer in the crockpot all day.  Make gravy with the drippings.   Add potatoes and a veggie and you have a meal fit for a king.  Or a chubby grandma.  Your choice.

I love it when I see the light bulb go on over the head of one of my children.  A while ago the power in our building was shut off most of the day.  A couple of days ago Duane said to me, 'I need to store more water.  I didn't realize just how many of those small bottles of water it takes to fill the coffeemaker.'  Nothing like priorities to change one's way of thinking.  :)

Nothing exciting or earth-shattering going on here.  Crochet work, naps, reading, etc.  It is a simple life, but it is my simple life and I like it.  :)

    1. All things considered, Gorges, it is. Peaceful. No drama. Well, except for that elephant stomping about on my roof this week. :)

  2. One time we went camping and forgot to bring jugs of water for the coffee. We had small bottles, and used those. Yeah, it takes a lot to fill it.

    1. Kristina...I think we don't realize sometimes how much water we use until we can't just turn on a faucet.

  3. That's the paradox of bottled water. Either you have many to open, or only one that's too heavy to lift without spilling.

That venison recipe sounds good. I might even get my wife to try some, if I cook it.

    1. Jess...I keep several empty 5-gallon buckets that I fill when we lose power and before the water pressure disappears. I can't lift them, but I can dip water out of them. 2-liter soda bottles and large juice bottles of water stashed all over my apartment gives me water for necessities, like coffee. Six cases of bottled drinking water are on a shelf, but even all of that will not be enough for long term power outage.
I like the taste of venison. Was raised on it and raised my kids on it. But there is just something about the addition of onion that makes it taste even better. The crockpot just makes it melt-in-you-mouth tender.

    1. That makes me think of after hurricane Harvey. We couldn't get out, the power was out, and all we had to cook on was propane grill.

I'd kept a drip percolator from my mother's estate, so we had the equipment. After heating water on the grill, a few scoops of coffee, and a short wait, we had the beverage that makes civilization a reality.

    2. Mary... A while back I thought I needed a Mr. Coffee type coffeemaker, so I bought one. I used it for a short time and then went back to my old drip coffee pot. The new isn't always the best. :)

Jess...I have one of those old coffee pots where you pour hot water into the top section, the water drips down through a basket of grounds and coffee drips into the bottom pot. That coffee pot was purchased by my parents and is at least as old as me - 72 years. And it still makes the best coffee.

  5. Your story of the roof repair reminded me of something. I was still married and we had lined up a roofer who had come highly recommended. He put us on his list and told us he would get to us as soon as he could. Well, one morning, hubs and I were sitting on the sofa having coffee and the whole house shook. He thought it was an earthquake. My comment was "I guess the roofer is here". Sure enough, the house was shaking when the crew was loading the shingles onto the roof. Ha!
Your steaks in the crockpot sound great. Yum.
I put up Christmas lights by my front door. Two small strings and a bunch of clips. Only need the step stool, my kind of project.
Snow is predicted for Saturday, we'll see.
    Cheers, SJ

    1. SJ...The crashing and banging seems to have stopped. I was certain that something was about to come crashing through the ceiling, judging by the shaking and the noise. I hope they're finished with the work.

I don't do any Christmas decorating any more. I just don't have space to store decorations. I quit having a tree when I had cats who would undecorate it at an amazing speed!

No snow predicted here for the next week or so. While I was writing this to you, youngest son called from California. He had found a beach and called so I could listen to the ocean waves hit the shore. He said the weather was beautiful, but there were too many human snowflakes for his liking. Ha!

  6. Oh that noise was the tent city going up for all the illegals coming to town. I think city hall is full so is the other city buildings. They can't use the reservation, separate country. I hear they are thinking of road blocks to check your passport to enter. Building walls next year.
