Quiet here...

in my little corner of the world.  We had a good Thanksgiving dinner with enough leftovers so I didn't have to cook for a couple of days.  I have been spending time reading and listening to my audio books while sewing or crocheting.  The biggest thing I did was to run six pounds of frozen corn through my dehydrator.  I may become more productive this coming week, but until then, enjoying the peace and quiet of my Home Sweet Apartment is enough.

  1. Interesting! I remember my mom had a dehrdrator when I was a kid and my fave thing was pineapple. I'm curious about trying roof veggie chips in a dehydrator. Ever try beets or anything?

  2. I have been bored out of my mind. Slept good last night, and took a nap this afternoon. Retirement will drive me insane, oh wait been there already. I have had some ideas come to mind, but I prefer not to go to jail....0)

  3. Nothing wrong with that. Sometimes a person needs a little time to recharge, just like a battery.

  4. Jenn...I haven't really dried anything to use as snack chips other than cucumbers. I salted the slices before drying and they turned out really good.

The only root crops I have dehydrated so far are carrots (sliced, diced and shredded) and potatoes (sliced and diced). The carrot slices wind up looking like little orange nuggets but rehydrate back to perfect slices. The potatoes come out looking like thick potato chips but are way too hard to be eaten as chips. They make great scalloped potatoes, though.

I can't have a garden, so other root crops like beets are kind of hard to find. Much of my produce comes from a large Farmer's Market. Sometimes I can get a good price and sometimes, not so much. I do buy frozen vegetables like corn, peas, mixed vegetables, broccoli, etc. and dehydrate those to save freezer space. And they keep longer dried than frozen. Hope this helps. :)

  5. Rob...You need a hobby - one you can concentrate on at home! Seriously, I am never bored. I am loving retirement and have for the past 8 years. As far as losing your mind goes - keep in mind that we crazy ones usually have more fun than the sane people do. :)

  6. Gorges...That is exactly what the past couple of days have been - battery recharging time. Whether or not it worked remains to be seen. :)

  7. Good to hear from you. I'm enjoying some slow time at home as well. Mostly reading and watching movies. The biggest activity is taking the dog for his walk each day. I went into early retirement in 2009 due to health reasons and, really, I have not been bored yet. SJ

  8. Hi SJ...I took early retirement about the same time as you. I didn't have health issues then, but I think I was just plain worn out. I do miss having the dogs, but even so, I have to say that I'm never bored either. I have always loved sewing (now quiltmaking) and needlework, as well as reading everything I could lay my hands on. And the food preservation keep me busy. I think if I were a person who had to be on the go all the time I probably would have gone crazy by now. Fortunately I like living alone and I like being home. Guess it all works out, doesn't it! :)
