My windows were wide open early this morning, letting in the cool breeze. All of a sudden I hear noise. It gets louder and louder. When I turn to look, I see the sky is filled with honking geese. They are flying north.
Most of the geese who summer here returned weeks ago. Some even before all the snow had melted. These guys are really late in arriving.
Maybe they didn't get the memo.

A gaggle of Canadian geese decided to stay a few years ago. They're like annoying pets, that live across from the office.
ReplyDeleteThey have their own private lake, plenty of food and few predators.
I watched a large truck navigate through them the other day; tapping the horn and carefully avoiding those that stayed in the road.
I love that sound. It was so rare when I was a kid. I'm glad their numbers are back up.
ReplyDeleteJess...There are about a dozen geese that stay here all year, in a tiny bay off the river that doesn't freeze over. How they survive, I don't know.
ReplyDeleteThere are small lakes, ponds and sloughs everywhere and all are populated with geese. And every year the local officials have some of them relocated. I always thought the geese had more of a right to be here than do the people. Geese were here first.
Gorges...A few years ago I was sitting out on the deck of my building, reading and enjoying the cool fall air. All the geese in the area must have decided to head south at once, for I watched a steady flow of them fly over. This lasted for over an hour. It was an amazing sight.
ReplyDeleteThe geese always seem to be on the move. We have some over at the golf course here in town. The babies are getting big fast. I have seen some swans and pelicans too around here. The swans are so beautiful being so white.
ReplyDeleteI love the sound of our ducks quacking - they're such self-sufficient creatures :)
ReplyDeleteStrange - ducks don't migrate according to the seasons, do they?
Rob...I haven't seen swans or pelicans here along the river. They must prefer standing water. But now and then I can watch the eagles hunt the river. They are spectacular.
ReplyDeleteDani...Years ago I raised ducks, and they were fun. I'd stand and holler "Quack, quack, quack" and they would come running for their feed.
ReplyDeleteThe ducks around here leave in the fall and come back in the spring. Probably has to do with our harsh winters.
I think there are still geese at the small pond near my house. They stay there until it gets cold. Where they go then, I don't know.
ReplyDeleteHarry...They must go even further south - maybe near the coastline where it isn't as cold as it is on your mountain in winter. I've always been fascinated how in the fall, even though they are spread out over a large area, most of them decide to leave here on the same day.
