Annoying

I have been dealing with setting up my new Kindle, which involved setting up WiFi, which involved time spent on the phone to my service provider.  Got it done, but it killed a good chunk of my morning.

I have a bunch of books on my computer that I downloaded previously, but the file format needed to be changed to be compatible with the Kindle, so that took care of my afternoon and part of the evening.  I think I am going to like it once I get the books onto it and have time to actually use it.

When I finally got around to looking at my blog tonight, I found that it has developed those annoying highlighted words than when you mouse over them, an ad pops up.  Geez, I hate those.  I have no idea where they came from or how to get rid of them.  If anyone has any idea how to get them to go away, I'd appreciate the advice, keeping in mind that if I have to dig very deep, I get lost.  A computer geek I am not.

Other than that, it has been a good day.  Any day in March that it doesn't snow is a good day.  The piles of snow are melting and there is water on the streets in liquid form, not solid!  And I will just continue to pretend that it is spring.  Works for me.

PS:  I think I may have stumbled onto getting rid of those annoying ads, but if you see any words highlighted or pop-up ads, please let me know.  Thanks.

  1. I have a Kindle HD. It is good for getting digital magazines and books, but the only web browser you can use with it, the Silk, is utterly useless. It crashes so much they have a built in application that asks you if you want to restore your tabs after a crash. I have read on line that some people who are technically savvy can change the operating system enough to use a browser called Dolphin but that is beyond me.
Everytime I call Amazon support for help with my Kindle, I get Indians. They are nice people but I can't understand them very well.

  2. I believe that I've decided not to fool with one. In off-grid and true emergency situations, they wouldn't work anyway. I like a real book.

  3. Harry...I got mine strictly for reading, so no bells and whistles. I had to figure out setting up WiFi just so I could register the dang thing because it wouldn't work without registration. I won't be buying books for it because I don't use credit cards. Over time I have downloaded around 500 books, mostly from the "Project Gutenberg" website and a couple of others, for free. Because my computer is a desktop model, the only way I could read those books was sitting at my desk, and I wanted to be able to sit and read in a comphy chair or in bed, so I think this will work well for what I had in mind.

  4. Gorges...I like a paper book as well, but space here in my apartment is so limited that it just made sense to go with an electronic reader. I know that it won't work in a grid-down situation, but until then it is the best solution for me. Some folks escape into TV. I escape into a book. I'm not happy unless I have something to read and this solves the problem.

  5. Your Kindle will work fine in a grid down situation. It is battery powered and a simple solar device (link available upon request) will power it back to full charge within minutes. Most books from Amazon are less than five dollars. You'll love it. Here, found the link.

  6. Or, just Google 'Goal Zero.' Any solar system will work, but this is the one I use.

  7. Stephen...Thanks for the link. I had forgotten about solar chargers. Glad you reminded me. I think I'm going to like my Kindle. I usually don't buy stuff like that, but I have a bit of mad money saved, and I decided it was time I treated myself!! Some people go through withdrawl when their cell phones won't work. I go through withdrawl if I don't have something to read!

  8. Hi Vicki - I'm also able to borrow books and digital magazines through my library and they are FREE. Love free things :) In Dakota County you can do it all online too. Love, Cousin Debbie

  9. Hey, Debbie...I hadn't thought about the library. I imagine Scott County probably has a similar program. I like FREE. It appeals to my inner cheap. :) Good to hear from you, Cousin.

  10. I just got an iPad, and am spending lots of time trying to learn how to use it!! Am sure I will like it when I figure it out!

  11. CottonLady.....Thankfully, the learning curve for my Kindle wasn't bad at all, but I got it just for reading, so there wasn't that much to learn. I tend to get stubborn and keep at something until I figure it out!! I'm sure you will love your new iPad. Aren't gadgets fun?!
