So I'm sitting here this evening, doing a bit of hand sewing on a quilt, and listening to "Broadcastify" for my county police and fire squads. We had a few inches of snow here today and it must have stuck to the roadways. There have been reports of crashes on the highways...one right after another. I think if you wanted to drive into a ditch tonight, you had best call ahead and make a reservation. Sounds like the ditches are pretty well filled already.
And then just a little while ago there is a report of a 4-car pile up. By the time the officers get to the scene, a few more cars have joined in the fender bender. One of the officers, observing the scene from an overpass said, "Geez! Looks like a demolition derby down there."
I think I'm really glad to be home where it is dry and warm and there is no ice. Except in my freezer.

When I first moved to where I now live, there was an old filling station/used tires/towing establishment on the corner of the local farm to market road and the interstate.
ReplyDeleteThe proprietor was a grizzled, never clean shaven, ornery old fart that would give me special deals on used tires for my trailer, while stiffing the poor sunsabitches that wandered in off the interstate.
While talking to him, one day, we discussed an ice and snow event of a few years past. His eyes glazed over, a huge smile appeared on his face and he described the windfall of the event.
He stayed up for 36 hours and slowly wandered up and down the interstate. He charged $50 to pull a car from a ditch and the business was good.
I'm sure he's long gone by now. The business was replaced by a convenience store two decades ago and if his business acuity held, he made a bundle and lived happily ever after.
A true Minnesotan forgets how to drive each and every snow fall. I always slow down to at lest 5 to 10 below the posted speed. I always have some idiot behind me who wants to drive faster then the posted during the snow storm.
ReplyDeleteLol!
ReplyDeleteJess...The tow truck drivers here are jumping up and down for joy on a night like tonight! That old man would have made enough to retire on!!
ReplyDeleteRob...It's like these people think there is a prize for getting to the next stop light before anyone else! If I were a betting person, my money would be on the cause of most of these accidents being speed. Idiots.
ReplyDeleteMary...Yeah, I'm snickering, too!! I'm home, in my jammies, cup of hot chocolate in front of me, and they are out slipping and sliding all over the roads! And those in the ditch will pay dearly to be hauled out.
ReplyDeleteYou naughty lady you...eavesdropping like that. Wish I had a scanner. Then again our local critters scramble their signals. That Jess is a hoot isn't he.
ReplyDeleteStephen...I know. I'm bad that way. I don't have a scanner. The link in this post goes to a website where you can listen to police and fire calls all over the country. I may have to stay up to see what happens when the bars here close.
ReplyDeleteYes, Jess is a hoot. I can picture that old man he wrote about. I know some like that! I think a couple of them might even be relatives. heh
You think the drivers here are bad in the winter, Florida is that bad year round. The Puerto Ricans in Orlando are the worst drivers ever!!!
ReplyDeleteRob...Seems like there are people - here, there, everywhere - get behind the wheel of a car and go into "crazy mode." Hurry, hurry, hurry!
ReplyDeleteI think I'm glad I don't own a car any more. I never want to be in that big a hurry.
I love listening to Broadcastify. You can get the storm warnings before the are on tv.And it's fun listening to whats happening in the area. Duane
ReplyDeleteSon...I had fun listening to it last night. For a while, there were so many cars sliding into the ditches that the police were having a hard time keeping them all straight. The Demolition Derby was on 169 by the Ferry Bridge and there was another near Lakeville. Glad I was home!
